To meet the demand of motorists who need the strength and capability of a full-size pickup, and a fuel efficient power plant, Chevrolet has released a hybrid version of its popular Silverado 1500 pickup.
The 2010 Silverado Hybrid starts with a 6-liter V8 with cylinder deactivation technology that allows it to run on 4 cylinders to save fuel. This engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission coupled with planetary gear-sets that allow for continuously variable gear ratios. This is combined with twin 60-kilowatt electric motors for a total of 332 horsepower sent to the rear wheels, or available 4-wheel drive with low range.
Here are the highest and lowest EPA estimates for fuel economy:
While much of the emphasis has been put into saving fuel, in fact as much as a 50% improvement in city driving, the Silverado Hybrid is still a solid, well-appointed, full-size pickup that can tow up to 6,100 pounds and carry a payload of over 1800 pounds.
Base MSRP for the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid is $38,340. A 4-wheel drive model in the top level trim will start at $47,820. The Silverado Hybrid is backed by 5-year, 100,000-mile power-train warranty.
With all the rugged capability found in every Chevy truck; and extra value at the pump, the 2010 Silverado Hybrid will satisfy drivers who want a full-size pickup, with the fuel economy of a full-size sedan.
