2013 Chevrolet Spark Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

Vehicle Overview

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark enters the sub-subcompact segment for this model year, offering something no other car in the class has: four doors. Powered by an 84-horsepower 1.2-liter inline-4 engine paired with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, the Spark gets an EPA-estimated 32/38 mpg city/highway and a 314 mile range. The Chevrolet Spark is a great car for city driving and those conscious about fuel economy and rising gas prices.

In a late 2012 test drive, the 84 horsepower failed to deliver appropriate acceleration, but made up for that in fuel economy and ease of driving around the city. Intent on grabbing the attention of younger buyers, thanks to its inexpensive price and compact size, the Chevrolet Spark maneuvered well through the city streets of Los Angeles, but struggled when reaching higher speeds and darting through traffic or climbing up steep hills. It features a quiet interior for its size, and meets the expectations placed on it to be an inexpensive subcompact for those who stay in the city. "If we had to point out a single winning attribute to the Spark, it'd be that the hatchback is small enough for city life, yet spacious inside for adults to run about with their friends and cargo thanks to the usable rear seat."

Available in three model options--LS, 1LT, and 2LT--the 2013 Chevrolet Spark offers plenty of headroom, performance, and features to make it competitive. Standard features on the LS model include power windows, air conditioning, 60/40-split folding rear seats, height-adjustable driver seat, tilt-only steering wheel, trip computer, OnStar communications, and a four-speaker radio. The 1LT adds to the LS standard features to include power-adjustable mirrors, cruise control, remote keyless entry, floor mats, MyLink, Bluetooth phone and audio, satellite radio, and steering-wheel mounted audio and phone controls. The 2LT offers foglights, roof rails, sporty front and rear fascias, chrome exterior trim, faux leather upholstery, front heated seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
