The 2022 Chevrolet Spark is the cheapest model Chevy sells, with prices starting below $15,000. Aimed at shoppers with restrictive budgets, or tiny parking spaces, the Spark competes with bite-sized cars such as the Kia Rio and Nissan Versa.
The 2022 Spark is unchanged from last year, save for a few new colors. Crimson (dark red) is added to the lineup, as is Blue Glow (dark blue) and Nitro Yellow. Passion Fruit (purple), Toasted Marshmallow (off-white), and Caribbean Blue (medium blue) are no longer available.
The 2022 Chevy Spark punches above its price point. Given the Spark's position as the cheapest car in America, that may sound like faint praise, but the Spark lives up to its name with liveliness and cheer. The exterior is sharp without trying too hard, and the Spark's quirky charm is accentuated by bright paint options.
The powertrain is anemic, but that's true of every car in this price range. The Spark separates itself with surprising levels of grip, a stable ride, and nimble handling. Road noise isn't intrusive, and it takes rough pavement to unsettle the suspension. Unlike some competitors, the Spark feels like it was put together well.
The interior is sparse but pleasant, with an attractive layout and a respectable infotainment system. The base LS is stuck with manual windows and locks, but most trims offer strong feature-per-dollar value. With the departure of the Honda Fit, the Chevy Spark is among the frontrunners for heir to the economy-hatch throne. We recommend cross-shopping it against the Kia Rio, but we'd take either one over a Mitsubishi Mirage.
Only one powertrain is available in the Spark, and it isn't particularly strong. The 1.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder makes 98 horsepower and 94 lb-ft of torque, which is low even by econo-car standards. On the plus side, the Spark weighs scarcely over a ton, so the power is (just) adequate. In our 2016 test, the Spark puttered from 0 to 60 mph in 10.7 seconds, which is still quicker than a Mitsubishi Mirage.
A five-speed manual comes standard, but a CVT is available for $1,100. Front-wheel drive is the only option. Topping out at an EPA-estimated 30/38 mpg city/highway, the Spark is efficient by most standards, but still thirstier than the Versa or Rio.
Since 2018, the Activ trim has offered an unconventional crossover-like alternative for thrifty shoppers. In addition to skidplates, roof rails, and a 0.4-inch gain in ground clearance, the Spark Activ comes with heated front seats and leatherette upholstery. The wheelwells get plastic cladding, which lends an adventurous look. Just don't expect any serious capability off the beaten path.
The IIHS has conducted only limited testing on the 2021 Spark, which earned Good scores in the moderate overlap front and side crash tests. The NHTSA has yet to test the model.
Active safety features are scarce. Automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning are available, but only on a CVT-equipped 2LT model. Even then, they're a $295 option.
The Spark's tiny 143-inch length means that interior space is hard to come by. Passenger capacity is limited to four, and cargo capacity is less than you'll find in a Kia Rio hatchback.

Every Spark gets a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and two USB ports. For the price, that's a remarkably complete kit. Every trim except the base LS gets a six-speaker sound system and steering wheel-mounted controls.
The 2022 Chevy Spark is available in four trims: LS, 1LT, Activ, and 2LT. Starting prices range from around $14,500 to around $19,000.
The Chevy Spark is one of few cars to still offer a manual transmission, and it hardly dents the Spark's fuel economy. We'll take it and put the savings toward upgrading to the 1LT. It adds power features and keyless entry in addition to the upgraded sound system, making it cheaper and better equipped than a base Kia Rio.
