The 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV that is very similar to the GMC Yukon. It's built on the same platform as all full-size pickups manufactured by General Motors, giving it the strength and durability of a truck. There are two trim lines available, each with its own V-8 engine, and both trim lines can be equipped with rear drive or all-wheel drive.
Body Styles: SUV
Engines: 4.8-liter V-8, 5.3-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Chevrolet Tahoe LS, Chevrolet Tahoe LT
The 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe provides a standard Premium Ride suspension that was optional in previous years. A flexible fuel version of the 5.3-liter, V-8 engine found in the LT is new and allows the option of using ethanol/gasoline fuel blends. The LS gains a range of standard features including fog lights, heated mirrors, six-way power front seats, side-mounted steps, and a programmable transmitter for opening garage doors or gates. The OnStar communications system is now standard for the LT model and optional for the LS model.
When the 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe was last redesigned, it received new sheet metal that was better able to resist rust and corrosion, as well as dents. The exterior has remained basically the same since the last redesign except for the standard side-mounted assist steps that were added on all models. Passenger entry and exit is made possible through four full-size doors, and the cargo area can be accessed by either a side swinging cargo door or an aluminum lift gate. For those that want true off-road capability, the Z71 off-road package is available that provides a stiffer suspension, increased protective equipment, treaded tires, and a special Z71 badge, as well as the OnStar communications system as standard. A roof rack is standard with the Z71 package but optional for both the LS and LT models.
The spacious 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe can hold up to nine passengers if the optional third row of seating is installed. A three-person bench seat is the standard for the front seats with bucket seats as an option. The second row features a three-person bench. Both the second and third rows of seats can be folded down or removed to allow flexibility when it comes to passenger and cargo space within the cabin.
The 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe is comfortable and functional. Instruments and controls are laid out in an easy-to-read and functional manner. Due to the height of the SUV, drivers benefit from increased visibility when driving. The comfort of all passengers is assured for the length of the ride with plenty of standard features such as air-conditioning, power front seats, power windows and mirrors, rear climate controls, and an audio system available.
Performance & Handling
The 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe model determines which V-8 engine is under the hood. The base LS is equipped with the 4.8-liter, V-8 engine that produces 275 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque, while the LT model has the 5.3-liter, V-8 engine and benefits from 285 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission available for all models is a four-speed automatic transmission. All models can be equipped with rear drive, or all-wheel drive provided by the GM AutoTrac system that can be engaged at all times and includes low-range gearing.
The 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe's V-8 engines provide adequate power for acceleration, although the smaller 4.8-liter can struggle when the SUV is towing its maximum load. Steering and handling is impressive and a lot more maneuverable than would be expected for a vehicle of its size. It's easy to drive around town, but some body lean can be expected when cornering. The ride is smooth with most bumps being absorbed by the suspension, and wind and road noise is practically non-existent.
The 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe includes standard safety features such as anti-lock brakes, front side airbags, energy absorbing foam on the interior surfaces, and seat-mounted seat belts. Traction control is available as an option.
