2005 Chevrolet Tahoe Review

Jam packed with interior features and towing power.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV is a great full-sized sport utility vehicle for off and on road. It has the least amount of cargo space, but just as much power as similar SUV’s. It packs a horsepower of 285 or 295 depending on the size of engine. The changes for this year are quieter performance, new rear door, and added security systems. It has great handling, an average safety rating, and average fuel economy.

The Range

Body Styles: Sport utility vehicle
Engines: 4.8-liter V-8, 5.3-liter V-8
Transmissions: Four-speed automatic
Models: Commercial, LS, LT

What's New

The 2005 Chevy Tahoe SUV has the option for a touchscreen navigational system and now comes with overhead rear lift gates instead of the old-fashioned rear barn door style doors. For the two-wheel-drive models, there is the option to install the Z71 off-road package. For interior noise, Chevy has put in a quieter higher capacity fan and alternator. Six generation OnStar security system is now standard for all the Tahoe models, and the tire pressure light can now tell you which tire, if any, is low.

Exterior

The 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe is shorter than Chevrolet’s Suburban SUV by 22 inches. The roof has the SUV standard luggage rack with cross rails and roller to make item loading much easier. For safety, the Tahoe has tubular assist steps to help climb into the seats easily. The headlights are dual halogen composite and run during the daytime for added visibility. Fog lamps cut through thick fog helping to navigate through dangerous weather. The side mirrors are power folding and adjustable as well as heated for cold weather. The mirrors also have two programmable settings for different drivers. The driver-side mirror also dims when hit by headlights from trailing cars. There are five colors to choose from, mostly blues and reds, but there is the option for white for a lighter look.

Interior

The Chevrolet Tahoe comes equipped with power reclining bucket seats with leather surfaces. Fitted have a 10-way power adjustable control, the seats also have heated cushion and seat backs. The driver side also has two programmable settings for multiple drivers. The 2005 Tahoe can seat five to nine people with use of the third row of seats. The steering column has an adjustable tilt-wheel and includes brake/transmission shift interlock. There are also audio controls on the steering wheel for less distracted driving. The tire pressure monitoring system specifically indicates which tire is low.

The windows and door locks are both power controlled, and the pedals are power adjustable. The air-conditioning allows for different climate settings for both the driver and the passenger including the rear ones. The defogger covers both the front and back windows, and the sound system included is an ETR FM/AM stereo with a six-disc changer. The sound system is great on Chevy’s Tahoe as it has a Bose Premium speaker system, which consists of nine speakers and a subwoofer. The inside rearview mirror has a compass, temperature indicator, and passenger air bag information.

Performance & Handling

The 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV comes with your choice of a 4.8-liter or 5.3-liter V-8 engine, which produces 285 horsepower with 295 lb-ft of torque, and 295 horsepower with 335 lb-ft of torque. The chassis of the Tahoe is very rigid, which allows for great handling and a smooth comfortable ride at high speeds. There is an optional Z71 package for hauling and towing. The 2005 Chevy Tahoe has four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, tow, and haul mode. The models have optional four-wheel drive and the ones without are rear drive, which can be challenging to use during difficult weather conditions. Rear drive makes the Tahoe practically useless in heavy snow.

Safety

The 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV received an average safety rating of four stars for driver and passenger front impact and three stars for its rollover rating. The brakes are the standard anti-lock brake system. The air bags are dual stage driver and front passenger bags with passenger occupant sensing system. The headlights include daytime running lamps for added visibility on the road.
