2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Review

Spacious and comfortable, yet rugged and capable.

Reviewed by Automotive on

While redesigned from the previous year, the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV that’s as comfortable on the inside as it is rugged on the outside. The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe offers improved ride and handling as well as an attractive, highly-functional cabin.

The Range

Body Styles: Full-size SUV
Engines: 4.8-liter V-8, 5.3-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Tahoe LS, Tahoe LT, Tahoe LT2, Tahoe LT3, Tahoe LTZ

What's New

The 2008 Chevy Tahoe sees minimal changes for 2008. These include an introduction of built-in storage compartments for the 40/20/40-split front bench seats as well as side curtain airbags for all models. OnStar turn-by-turn navigation systems are made standard on both the LT and LTZ trim levels.

Although it’s a couple of feet shorter than the Chevrolet Suburban, the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe remains a formidable looking full-size SUV.

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is available in two trim levels: LS and LT. The base model comes will 17-inch alloy wheels. The LT models add foglamps and color-keyed exterior trim. The top-of-the-line LTZ package boasts such features as 20-inch alloy wheels, locking rear differential, power liftgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and Autoride rear suspension.

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe has an attractive-looking interior that makes use of high-quality build materials. The controls are laid out simply and sensibly as the navigation system is user-friendly. The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is capable of accommodating up to nine passengers, which puts it on par with a full-size passenger van. The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe also boasts a maximum cargo capacity of 109 cubic feet.

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe is available in two trim levels: LS and LT. The base model LS is fairly well-equipped and includes such standard features as a 40/20/40-split front seat, OnStar telematics, satellite radio, power accessories, dual-zone climate control, an MP3-compatible CD player, and a trip computer.

Stepping up to the LT models gains you additional features that include steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, front bucket seats, and OnStar turn-by-turn navigation. There are also three additional equipment groups available for the LT: LT2, LT3, and LTZ.

The LT2 package sees the addition of leather upholstery, a six-CD changer, power adjustable pedals, remote vehicle starting, and rear parking assist. The LT3 package includes heated 12-way adjustable front seats and a Bose sound system. The top-of-the-line LTZ package boasts such features as heated second row seating and power-folding second row seating.

Performance & Handling

The two-wheel-drive (2WD) version of the base model LS comes equipped with a 4.8-liter, V-8 engine rated at 295 horsepower, which produces 305 lb-ft of torque. The four-wheel-drive LS and all versions of the LT come with a 5.3-liter V-8 that’s rated at 320 horsepower, which produces 340 lb-ft of torque. The 5.3-liter engine is also available as an option on the 2WD LS.

Despite its formidable size, the 2008 Chevy Tahoe provides decent acceleration and is capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in just 8.6 seconds. However, the 5500-pound Tahoe loses a bit of power when it’s carrying a full load of passengers or cargo.

Reviews indicate that while the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe does indeed provide a soft, comfortable ride, steering and handling are a bit rubbery. However, the 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe offers formidable towing capability; when properly equipped, it can handle up to 8200 pounds.

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe standard safety features include anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, and full-length side curtain airbags. In frontal crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the 2008 Chevy Tahoe received five out of five stars.
