2022 Chevrolet Traverse MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Spacious cabin
  • Strong V-6
  • Intuitive infotainment tech

Cons

  • Cheap-feeling interior
  • Mediocre long-term value
  • No auto-AWD activation

Although not as big and burly as the Tahoe and Suburban, the Traverse is a spacious three-row crossover that leans toward the larger side of its segment. Chevrolet introduced the current, second-generation Traverse for the 2018 model year and is issuing a midcycle face-lift for 2022 that integrates styling elements from the aforementioned newly redesigned Chevy full-size SUVs. The Traverse competes against other three-row family SUVs including the Kia Telluride, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander.

What's New

  • Updated front- and rear-end styling
  • Standard LED headlights and taillights
  • Four new wheel designs
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now available
  • Newly standard driver-assist safety features

What We Think

The Chevrolet Traverse certainly has its strengths, but newcomers like the Kia Telluride have made it a less desirable SUV than it once was. Its largest-in-class interior affords massive cargo carrying capability and third-row seating that can comfortably fit adults. The Traverse placed sixth in our nine-way Big Test of three-row SUVs, held back by a cheap-feeling interior, unimpressive five-year cost of ownership, and stingy safety features. Chevrolet is including more driver assist content as standard for 2021, but adaptive cruise control is still limited to higher trims.

In our First Test, the Traverse impressed with its remarkably supple ride quality and reasonable body control for the segment. The standard 310-hp V-6 and nine-speed automatic provide strong acceleration and smooth, responsive shifts, although the engine can get a bit shouty at higher rpms. We like the intuitive infotainment system, too. Chevy's big three-row is even decent off-road, even if the lack of an auto-AWD mode and the awkwardly placed drive mode switch are frustrating.

So yes, the Traverse offers a colossal cabin, smart infotainment tech, and strong performance, but alongside newer competitors its cheap interior can make it feel like a rental car at a premium price point. We'd opt for our SUV of the Year-winning Kia Telluride any day.

Performance and Fuel Economy

We're expecting the 2021 Traverse's standard V-6 to carry over for 2022. It's a 3.6-liter mill that develops 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque, working with a nine-speed automatic routing power for standard FWD or available AWD. For 2021, EPA fuel economy figures read 17-18/25-27 mpg city/highway.

Safety

The 2021 Traverse is a relatively strong performer in IIHS safety testing, with Good ratings in five crashworthiness evaluations and Superior scores in front crash prevention. It earned an Acceptable rating for its LED headlights which are newly standard for 2022, but the new design may alter the score. The 2021 Traverse also earns a five-star overall safety rating in NHTSA crash testing.

Whereas last year's Traverse required buyers to shell out for the RS trim or above for standard driver assist features, Chevrolet is adding a host of included safety content for 2022. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, and a following distance indicator will be included on all models. Adaptive cruise control is newly available on 3LT, RS, and Premier trims, and a safety alert seat is standard on Premier and High Country models.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The Traverse provides seating for seven or eight across three rows. Legroom measures 41.0 inches up front, 38.4 inches in the second row, and a respectable 33.5 inches for those in the way-back. As suggested by its generous dimensions, the Traverse offers more cargo space than any vehicle in the segment. The space behind the third-row bench is rated at 23.0 cubic feet, and that number expands to 57.8 and 98.2 cubes with the third and second row seats folded down.

Technology

The Traverse's infotainment suite is going mostly unchanged for 2022, with a couple notable exceptions. Base models still work with a 7.0-inch touchscreen display with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and higher trims are expected to retain the 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are newly available for 2022, as is an 8.0-inch instrument cluster display.
