Chevrolet Traverse

In came the Chevrolet Traverse in 2008 at the Chicago Auto Show, after the brand discontinued the Uplander and TrailBlazer, leaving big shoes to fill in the SUV line.

More on the Chevrolet Traverse
Chevrolet Traverse Origins

The Traverse began production at the GM Spring Hill, Tennessee plant until the entire production was moved to the Delta Township Assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan, due to the plant’s expertise in Lambda platform crossover vehicles.

About the Chevrolet Traverse

The Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover SUV. A huge vehicle, with third row seats, the Traverse can seat up to nine passengers in a pinch.

The vehicle is built on top of the GM Lambda platform. The traverse shares this full-size crossover SUV platform with the former Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave. The large Lambda frame allows easy access to the third row.

The Traverse is known for its decent fuel economy, especially in comparison to other vehicles of its size (17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway). The SUV is roomy with a lot of extra features to excite buyers who want performance but also elegance. The Traverse offers a lot of storage room and adult-friendly third row seating.

The size of the vehicle is one of its pros but also a con. The awe-inspiring size of the Traverse makes the SUV a bit difficult to control in tricky maneuvers. Also, due to the length of the vehicle, it is sometimes difficult to see through the rear window.

If you have a strong eye for detail, you may recognize the Traverse’s product placement on the NBC drama My Own Worst Enemy (GM owns NBC.) The Traverse also appears in the remake of Hawaii Five-0.

Chevrolet Traverse Features

The 2012 Chevrolet Traverse is available in four different styles: the LS, the 1LT, the 2LT, and the LTZ. All of the trim models come standard with all-wheel drive but offer front-wheel drive versions as well.

The LS is the base model of the Traverse. The model has modest trim, including 17-inch wheels with paint covers, power adjustable mirrors, a driver information center, and cruise control. It seats eight passengers and has a second-row bench set.

Even the standard model is a powerhouse. It contains a gas 3.6-liter V-6 with a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine makes 281 horsepower. The same engine is shared by all of the trim models, but the LTZ gets a boost to 288 horsepower.

All models come standard with six airbags and Stabilitrak traction control to improve handling.

The 1LT gets a trim upgrade including 18-inch aluminum wheels, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, and an eight-way power seat. Seven-passenger seating with captain chairs throughout the vehicle becomes available in this trim model. A sunroof is also available on this model and all the trim levels above it.

Safety improvements are available on this model and above. Variable assist power steering that improves handling is also made standard on this line and all the trim levels above it. Blind spot mirrors are integrated into the outside mirrors to improve visibility along the hulking sides of the vehicle to prevent accidents. An Ultrasonic rear parking assist also comes standard. This device beeps when the vehicle gets too close to an obstacle.

The 2LT ups the quality of the Traverse by adding a power-remote liftgate, a remote vehicle starting system, Bose speakers, an auto-dimming mirror, tri-zone climate control, heated seats, and second-row captain’s chairs standard. Sirius XM NavTraffic system, which provides live traffic updates, is also available.

The LTZ provides the top-of-the-line option. A 20-inch aluminum wheel set raises this Traverse above the rest. Dual exhaust with painted ends, power-folding mirrors, perforated leather on the first and second row captain’s seats, as well as heated and cooled seating makes this Traverse the height of elegance.

Chevrolet Traverse Evolution

The Traverse has not yet had a long production run. For the most part the vehicle has remained the same since the 2008 model year when the vehicle was introduced to the public. The LLT, double overhead cam V-6 engine with direct injection has remained standard on the vehicle throughout the run.

Sales of the vehicle have been modest. 2008 saw 9456 models sold, 2009 a striking leap to 91,074, and, in 2010, 106,744. Sales figures have not been released for the 2011 sales year.

If you are looking for a spacious, luxurious, and high-performance full-size SUV crossover, you can’t go wrong with the Chevrolet Traverse. Even the price is right. New and used vehicles should work equally as well.

Chevrolet has been out of the crossover market for quite a long time now, but they're attempting to reenter the market before losing their grip on the market entirely.

Traverse enters its third model year with minor changes. Heated cloth seats are now available on LT models. The stereo’s USB port is relocated to the upper instrument panel storage bin for easier access. Two new paint colors are White Diamond Tri-Coat and Steel Green Metallic. At this point in its product cycle, moderate sticker price discounts should be common.
