In recent years Chrysler has often reached back into its history to find design inspiration for its current model line-up and the 2007 300C may be its best example yet of creating a crisp, contemporary design that leaves no doubt as to its heritage. The Hemi engine designation and red, white and blue 300 badging come straight out of the mid-1960s when the big Chrysler was an icon in American automotive design.
The overall two-box body shape and characteristically Chrysler grille, the high belt line, long hood and generally squared off shape contrast nicely with the bulging fender flares filled with 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels and distinctive C-pillar treatment.
The blend of old and new continues under the hood where the 5.7 Liter Hemi V8 resides. While 340 horsepower is available when needed, the MDS or Multiple Displacement System automatically reduces the working cylinders from 8 to 6 for greater fuel economy when maximum power is not required.
EPA numbers for the 300C we tested are 17 City and 25 Highway.
Also befitting its heritage the 390 pound feet of torque are channeled to the rear wheels in the model we drove, albeit via a 5-speed electronic sequential gearbox and all wheel drive is optional. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes with traction control are optional on the base 300 but standard on all other trim levels as is electronic stability control.
Power, leather trimmed bucket seats, wood trim and white faced gauges dominate the interior dŽcor with the adjustable, leather and composite, multi function steering wheel providing a unique accent. A fold-down arm-rest is provided for rear-seat passengers and the split rear seat provides additional access to the trunk.
A 368 watt, 7-speaker Bose audio system is available as is DVD-based navigation with touch screen control. Dual-stage front airbags are standard on all models with front and rear side-curtain airbags available.
The base 300 carries an MSRP of $24,320, with our nicely equipped test 300C coming in at $41,490. All models come with a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty.
This is definitely NOT your father's Chrysler but there's a lot about the 300 C that he might just recognize.
