2004 Chrysler Sebring Review

Good value for a family sedan with plenty of styling and performance.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2004 Chrysler Sebring provides one of the few affordable midsize cars available in a convertible body style. In addition to the three body styles available for the 2004 model year, this year sees a long list of trim options as well. The Sebring also features three engine choices. These engines are paired with manual or automatic transmission choices. A well-cared-for Sebring could be a nice car choice.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, coupe, convertible
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 2.7-liter V-6, 3.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Chrysler Sebring sedan, Chrysler Sebring Touring sedan, Chrysler Sebring LX sedan, Chrysler Sebring Limited sedan, Chrysler Sebring coupe, Chrysler Sebring Limited coupe, Chrysler Sebring GTC convertible, Chrysler Sebring LX convertible, Chrysler Sebring convertible, Chrysler Sebring Touring convertible, Chrysler Sebring Limited convertible

What's New

For the 2004 model year, Chrysler makes some changes made to the Sebring’s trim levels and standard features. For any model equipped with anti-lock brakes, the Sebring now has low-speed traction control. The coupe also offers a revised dash, doors, and instrument panel trim. For the sedan and convertible models, Chrysler restyles the front fascia and decides on new wheels. While the GTC remains unchanged, the base, Touring, and Limited take over for the previous trim levels.

Exterior

The 2004 Chrysler Sebring comes in three separate body styles. The sedan features four doors, while the coupe uses two doors and the convertible offers its removable roof. The overall body design of the Sebring features a rounded front end and grille with uniquely designed headlights. The sleek, modern lines of the Sebring provide a distinctive accent as well. The rear of the Sebring appears slightly boxy. With so many body styles and trim levels it only stands to reason that Chrysler offers this car in a variety of color choices. The Sebring can be found painted Light Blue Pearlcoat, Black Pearlcoat, or Dark Titanium Metallic Clearcoat just to name a few.

Interior

Chrysler makes sure to create the most comfortable cabin for the Sebring. The 2004 Chrysler Sebring features bucket-style front seats and even the lower trim levels offer height-adjustable seats. The driver’s seat also has manually adjustable lumbar support. Power accessories, such as door locks and windows, come standard as well. Storage is available in the front center console and front seatbacks. Cup holders sit throughout the cabin as well. The steering wheel tilts to adjust for optimum comfort while driving. The 2004 Sebring also comes equipped with a multi-speaker audio system complete with an AM/FM radio and a CD player.

Performance & Handling

When it comes to performance and handling, the 2004 Chrysler Sebring is a mixed bag. Some critics claim that it feels unrefined and lacks smooth handling; others have been more than pleased with the car’s performance. The base 2.4-liter, four-cylinder motor offers adequate power, while the 3.0-liter V-6 really delivers the muscle. Paired with a choice of a manual or automatic transmission, the V-6 seems better suited for the driver who expects some speed and performance from the Sebring. This model proves dependable and reliable regardless of the trim level or engine choice selected.

Safety

Safety features mark an important part of choosing a car. Chrysler supplies the Sebring with a variety of useful features in the safety department. The 2004 Chrysler Sebring comes equipped with front adjustable headrests, front seat belt pretensioners, and an engine immobilizer in the base. Some of the higher trim levels also include a rear center lap seat belt and emergency interior trunk release. Traction control provides an optional safety feature on all of the Sebring models. Front fog and driving lights come standard. Auto delay-off headlights comprise part of the Chrysler safety package too.

EPA Fuel Economy

Chrysler Sebring 2.4-liter four-cylinder: 20/27 mpg city/highway
Chrysler Sebring 2.7-liter V-6: 19/25 mpg city/highway
Chrysler Sebring 3.0-liter V-6: 18/26 mpg city/highway
