Daewoo Nubira Origins
A front-wheel drive, front engine car, the Nubira replaced the Daewoo Nexia, also called the Daewoo LeMans, which actually ended up outliving the ill-fated Nubira. The Italian I.DE.A Institute (based in Turin, Italy) designed the car, basing it on the T-model of the Nexia, its predecessor. The Nubira, Lanos, and Laganza were introduced to the American market at the same time.
The Nubira was replaced in the European market in 2004 when a new sedan, the Daewoo Lacetti, was introduced. The Nubira name lives on in Europe on some of the station wagons and sedans produced by the Daewoo company, even though the vehicles are completely different from the Nubira car model. The Nubira, produced in the Taganrog, Russia plant, is also known as the Doninvest Orion. The Nubira, when introduced, was a cheap model perfect for the young driver on a budget or someone who needs a compact to get from point A to point B without flash. The Nubira has a few bits of gold mixed in with the clay. The body design is rather sleek with its generous curves. There’s nothing boxy about this one. The interior offers a decent amount of room and seats up to five passengers with plenty of leg and headroom.
The Nubira has a front-wheel drive, front engine design. Much of the interior is cheap and plastic, but you can’t expect more from a car priced so low. Most of the components are prone to cracking. Loose pieces also rattle and hum, making the Nubira a bit of a noisy ride.

The first Nubira model is offered as a four-door sedan, a five-door hatchback, and a five-door station wagon. The first generation, which ran from 1997 to 2000, is quite buggy. In 2000, when the second generation was released, over 90 improvements to the design were introduced. Passenger space increases and cabin noise is greatly reduced in these models. Redesign solved noise and vibration from the engine with the introduction of a new engine mount. The exterior is also streamlined by the second-generation remodel. The 2000 model is marketed in Korea as the J150 or the Daewoo Nubira II.
The first generation was introduced as an SE model as well as the standard station wagon model. In 1998, the SE and CDX variants were introduced to the line as well. The CDX version has a vastly superior safety rating to that of the SE. The model includes an anti-lock braking system that prevents skid outs and jerking while braking the car. Airbags were only introduced to the Nubira in 1999. If you’re safety minded, look for models from 1999 and later.
The initial engine produced for the United States market is a 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder engine. A 2.0-liter engine from Holden was introduced in 1998, which increased the horsepower to 129, a major improvement over the 1.6-liter. The fourth engine mount again absorbs the extra power. In international markets, the car was manufactured with one of three engines: a 1.6-, 1.8- or 2.0-liter. Strange for the international market, no diesel engines were ever produced for the Nubira.
It is well known that many Daewoo vehicles have a laughable safety record and are known for their terrible build. The Nubira stands as one of the first vehicles from the company that tries to buck that conception. This car is marketed to consumers looking for a cheap, basic vehicle model. With the cheap price, buyers have to accept the many limitations of the car. Overall, the car has poor engine performance, terrible steering (which continuously needs correcting and tends to under-steer) and braking (which is a real hindrance, even with the anti-lock braking system), and a very noisy cabin.
