The 2012 Dodge Avenger is competing in the tough midsize sedan class, but it may've finally found a way to separate itself from the crowd. With the addition of the R/T model using Chrysler's excellent Pentastar V-6 engine, the Avenger can move out of the rental car lot and into suburban driveways everywhere.
Besides the 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T, the Avenger didn't receive any other major upgrades for the 2012 model year. This is mainly due to the extensive redo of the exterior and interior from last year, which already gave the Avenger a new lease on life. The 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T is a new model aimed at sporty car drivers, and offers features such as a body-colored grille and 18-inch aluminum wheels.
The Avenger retains its aggressive styling but with the new engines and suspension upgrades last year, it finally has something under the hood to back it up. With the interior improvements, all that's left is for Dodge to continue working on shedding the Avenger's "rental car" reputation.

What's New
There are minimal changes to the 2012 Dodge Avenger after the sedan went through a refresh inside and out last year. The noticeable addition to the Avenger for 2012 is the R/T model.
Exterior
The 2012 Dodge Avenger's exterior was sharpened up slightly, adding small refinements here and there. The newly added R/T model brings a body-colored grille, a black headlight background, and 18-inch aluminum wheels. From behind a spoiler is visible and everything is topped off with the "R/T" badge. The SE and SXT will ride on 17-inch wheels while the SXT Plus will come standard with 18-inch wheels. The Avenger is available in eight colors for 2012.
Interior
The 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T is the top-of-the-line model, with front-seats that are heated and have the "R/T" logo stitched into the headrest. The instrument cluster has a tachometer mounted in the center with the "R/T" logo pasted on. The brake and gas pedals get its looks from Dodge's Street and Racing Technology division. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather with red stitching holding it together. Power windows, mirrors, and locks, a remote keyless entry, cruise control, and a 60/40 split folding rear seat are all standard features on the 2012 Avenger. The SXT Plus has Uconnect with Bluetooth is capable of storing 28 gigabytes of media and projects onto a 6.5-inch touch screen.
Performance & Handling
The Dodge Avenger comes standard with a 2.4-liter engine mated to a four- or six-speed automatic transmission. It produces 173 horsepower and gets up 31 mpg on the highway. The optional 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine offering 283 horsepower mated to a six-speed transmission and is rated 29 mpg on the highway. The springs have been recalibrated with the addition of the R/T model offering a quick and supple handling feel.
Safety
Multi-stage front airbags, front seat side air bags, and electronic stability control with electronic traction control are all standard features on the 2012 Dodge Avenger. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes, extra side curtain air bags and LATCH child seat anchor system also come standard.
