1998 Dodge B2500 Review

Whether its cargo or people, this mover outshines the competition.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 1998 Dodge B2500 is a full-size van. It's available as a cargo van, called the Ram Van or as a passenger van, called the Ram Wagon. It uses the same frame and engines as the B-Series pickup trucks. The Van is popular with service providers, including contractors, plumbers, and technicians for its abundant cargo space. The passenger Ram Wagon, which can seat up to 15 people, is most commonly used today by schools, church groups, the military, scouts, commuters, or as a corporate or company van.

What's New

The 1998 Dodge B2500 adds a 5.9-liter, V-8 engine for more power with modifications that have made it safer and more drivable. Most notable are the redesigned front end and improved brakes.

The 1998 Dodge B2500 van and wagon each have a 109-inch and 127-inch wheelbase. The LWB trim is 210.6 inches long, while the Maxi trim is 236.6 inches long. Both vans are 79.8 inches wide, while the LWB is 80.1 inches tall, and the Maxi is a little taller at 82.8 inches. The LWB model has a 4689-pound curb weight, while the Maxi mode weighs 4871 pounds. The van comes standard with 16-inch tires. All Dodge Ram Van cargo models come standard with rear barn doors and a sliding right-side door. The wagon passenger van has a base and SLT trim and are 205.2 inches long, 79.5 inches tall, and 79.8 inches wide with a curb weight of 5109 pounds.

The 1998 Dodge Ram Van’s front bucket seats seat two people with an optional third seat available as well. The rest of the cargo van’s interior serves as additional cargo space. The base model provides 200 cubic feet of cargo space, while the Maxi model increases cargo capacity to 294.6 cubic feet. The van’s interior is easy to climb in and out of, or load, thanks to twin rear doors enabling easy access. The wagon can accommodate up to 15 passengers with optional 12-passenger seating. The SLT package is top-of-the-line with cloth trim panels, cup holders, and seat map pockets. Both interiors get dual airbags, a revised dashboard, and an enhanced audio system.

Performance & Handling

The 1998 Dodge Ram Van's V-8 engine offers the best power. The 5.9-liter engine yields 330 lb-ft of torque and is likely the best option for demanding cargo carries and passenger transport. It also handles well for a heavier vehicle.

The 1998 Dodge Ram B2500 vans come standard with driver and passenger front airbags and a rear-wheel anti-lock braking system. There are no available NHTSA crash test ratings at this time.
