More on the Dodge Caliber
Dodge Caliber Origins

The Dodge Caliber is a compact car that replaced the Dodge Neon in 2007. Produced that year by DaimlerChrysler, Chrysler LLC continued the model until 2009. The Chrysler Group took over production in 2010 and in 2012, the Dodge Caliber saw its final year of production.

About the Dodge Caliber

The Dodge Caliber is known for its crosshair grille, flared fenders, and bold angles that are often used in Dodge’s larger vehicles. Made with oversized wraparound quad halogen headlamps and large modular crystal tail lamps, the Dodge Caliber is not your average four-door hatchback. Stylish and economical to drive with decent gas mileage, the Dodge Caliber offers more features as standard equipment when compared to other compact cars.

The Dodge Caliber offers its driver and passenger many options regarding stereo equipment. The Uconnect Media 310 audio system (AM/FM/CD/MP3/SiriusXM) offers a 6.5-inch touchscreen display that allows drivers and passengers to easily control what music they listen to; a nine-speaker Bose audio system with subwoofer is available on some models that offer the articulating liftgate speakers.

Driver and passenger safety has not been ignored. Electronic stability control helps the driver maintain control of the vehicle when extreme steering maneuvers are sensed. It applies selective braking and throttle to help keep the Dodge Caliber on its intended path. Anti-lock brakes provide additional protection while driving on slippery surfaces. The Dodge Caliber offers multi-stage airbags in the event of a collision, providing driver and passengers with cushioning to minimize injuries.

Dodge Caliber Features

The Dodge Caliber contains a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission in its SE (Express trim) model. Anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist come as standard equipment, as do stability control and traction control. The 2012 Dodge Caliber SE promises 24/32 mpg city/highway.

The SE includes 15-inch steel wheels, power windows and locks, heated mirrors, and an AM/FM/CD stereo with SiriusXM satellite radio and an iPod/USB interface. The interior of the 2012 Dodge Caliber offers many features that make it an attractive option for someone in the market for a compact car.

Standard features include cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, and 60/40-split folding back seats. The air-conditioning system has a Chill Zone cooler for storing beverages on hot summer days. Features you won’t find on most vehicles include the flip-down liftgate speakers and a dedicated iPod holder.

The SXT comes equipped with the same 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Mileage estimates are lowered for a Caliber equipped with the automatic transmission. The SXT Plus includes the same engine and the option of either the five-speed manual or automatic transmission. Eighteen-inch polished aluminum wheels, a color-keyed interior, and sport-tuned suspension are standard equipment on the SXT Plus.

Dodge offers the Caliber in five trim levels: Express, Mainstreet, Uptown, Heat, and Rush.

The Express is the trim afforded for the SE base model. Despite being the base model, it still offers cruise control, power locks and windows, and a stereo with USB and SiriusXM satellite radio.

The Mainstreet trim package offers a sunroof, sunshade, trailering package, garage door opener, and remote engine start among its options. Also available are 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a fold-flat front passenger seat, rear seatbacks that recline, and a rechargeable flashlight.

The Uptown is the luxury model, offering many options to satisfy drivers who want economy and luxury in their automobile. Among the amenities are automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a nine-speaker Bose audio system with steering wheel-mounted controls. The Uptown model includes the flip-down speakers on the liftgate.

The Heat is the sportiest model, with upgraded brakes, wheels, and suspension.

The Rush has a standard 2.4-liter, 172 hp, four-cylinder engine (as opposed to the standard 2.0-liter, 158 hp, four-cylinder on other trim levels). The larger engine is optional on the Uptown model. It also offers both a five-speed manual and a CVT transmission as options.

Dodge Caliber Evolution

The 2007 model contains a 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine and offers a 2.0-liter engine as an option. Additional options include a navigation system, a satellite radio, and side curtain airbags.

In 2008, Dodge introduced the SRT4, which offers a turbocharged, 258 hp engine. Chrome accents are also added to the interior. However, the SRT4 was discontinued the following year.

The 2010 model year introduced the five trim packages (Express, Heat, Mainstreet, Rush, and Uptown). The updated interior includes padded armrests and door panels.

The 2011 model offers improvements in steering, as well as improvements in the navigation system. It includes stability control as a standard feature on most trim levels.
