1996 Dodge Caravan Review

A safe transporter for little ones.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1996 Dodge Caravan is an early and successful line of minivans aimed at growing families. High capacity and enhanced safety features are typically the main selling point of this vehicle. The Caravan is known for adapting a car-like driving experience to a higher capacity vehicle.

The Range

Body Styles: minivan
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.3-liter V-6
Transmissions: three-speed automatic, four-speed automatic
Models: Dodge Caravan, Dodge Caravan SE, Dodge Caravan LE, Dodge Caravan ES

What's New

The 1996 Dodge Caravan gets an optional driver’s side rear door, which is the first of its kind. The new body design is more aerodynamic, improving its roll-over rating and fuel economy. The redesign allows for greater visibility, as it increases the windshield span by nearly 30 percent. The rear seats are no longer fixed, and the cargo area is enlarged by 20 percent. A windshield wiper deicer is standard on the LE and optional on all other models. Climate control panels now extend to the back seats as well.

Exterior

The 1996 Dodge Caravan gets rear windows with privacy tinting as a standard feature. Both side mirrors are heated to help during cold or foggy weather. The relatively sleek aerodynamic design gives a low coefficient of drag, which helps fuel economy, acceleration, and top speed. All models are available in gloss or pearl finish paint.

Interior

The 1996 Dodge Caravan seats up to seven people. It features bucket seats and front airbags for both passenger and driver. It offers a spacious cabin with front headroom of 39.8 inches and 40.1 inches of headroom in the rear. A compass is also designed into the console. The sound system includes four cabin speakers for the full stereo effect, and its ventilation system has four different fans speeds.

Performance & Handling

The 1996 Dodge Caravan gets a four-cylinder, three-speed automatic that has rather poor acceleration, but the V-6 models suffer much less from this issue. Like most vehicles of its size, the Caravan has a wide turning radius. The LE and ES models are also available in four-wheel drive, which gives slightly better handling at the cost of fuel economy. The luxury models feature standard four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

Safety

The 1996 Dodge Caravan receives driver and passenger front airbags with the traditional three-reel seat belts as a standard amenity. NHTSA, which rates injury protection through crash-tests, gave the driver’s front protection three out of five stars and four out of five stars for front passenger protection. Like a lot of minivans, the Caravan proves more readily adaptable for child safety seating because of the cabin design and ease of access. A warning chime for ajar doors and front and rear impact-absorbing bumpers also come standard.

EPA Fuel Economy

Dodge Caravan: 14/20 mpg city/highway
Dodge Caravan SE: 14/20 mpg city/highway
Dodge Caravan LE: 16/22 mpg city/highway
Dodge Caravan ES: 16/22 mpg city/highway
