1999 Dodge Caravan Review

A convenient option for large families that is priced fairly.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1999 Dodge Caravan was a three-door minivan sold from 1984 through 2007. In 1987, it was introduced along with a model with a longer wheelbase and a handful of additional features. After 2007, the short-wheelbase model was discontinued. All models have a front-engine front-drive layout, and the models built from 1990 through 2007 had an all-wheel-drive option (AWD). All models have a three-door minivan body style with a sliding door on the passenger side. It is known for its roomy interior and comfortable ride.

The Range

Body Styles: van
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.0-liter V-6, 3.3-liter V-6, 3.8-liter V-6
Transmissions: three-speed automatic, four-speed automatic
Models: Dodge Caravan, Dodge Caravan SE

What's New

The 1999 Dodge Caravan received no significant changes except in the Canadian market, where the 3.0-liter V-6 became standard equipment.

Exterior

The 1999 Dodge Caravan has a sharp front-end, featuring a small split grille with the Dodge logo just above the grille on the hood area. On either side, the headlights are thin and wrap around the sides slightly. The front upward angle is smooth compared to the bulky and slightly-rounded body, and the rear curves down sharply. The rear bumper protrudes slightly, and the wheels are pushed toward the corners for a wider and longer stance. The second and third-row windows are lightly tinted, and alloy wheels are optional on the SE only. Some exterior features include standard power mirrors on the SE and optional power mirrors on the base model, standard heated mirrors on the SE only, a standard spoiler on all models, optional delay-off headlights, optional fog lights on the SE only, and a rear window wiper. All models come standard with front-wheel independent suspension, and auto-leveling suspension is optional.

Interior

The 1999 Dodge Caravan is roomy, with several seating configurations available. This vehicle can seat anywhere from two to seven passengers, with seven passengers sitting across three rows for the SE models. The base models seat five standard and a third row is optional, bringing the total to seven. The inside is comfortable, and, despite its dimensions, it offers great visibility due to wraparound windows and a high seat position. Some features include optional leather trim on the SE, an optional power seat on the SE, an optional CD-player and standard cassette player with the SE and optional cassette player with the base model, optional remote keyless entry, and standard air-conditioning on the SE and optional air-conditioning on the base model.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Dodge Caravan offers a larger 180-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 that provides plenty of acceleration and speed with most loads. The low-end and mid-range engines (the 150-hp four-cylinder and the 158-hp, V-6 engines) may struggle at higher speeds if the vehicle fully-loaded. It also offers a comfortable ride and precise handling for a minivan.

Safety

The 1999 Dodge Caravan includes standard front-impact airbags, optional integrated rear child seats, and standard anti-lock brakes on the SE, which can be added to the base model.
