2000 Dodge Caravan Review

With a ton of competition with better safety scores, affordability marks the only advantage.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

With really bad crash-test scores, the 2000 Dodge Caravan does not mark the family van choice in its class. It may no longer be “America’s best-selling minivan? after this model year. However, it offers an affordable option if the consumer wants to stick with the Dodge family.

The SE includes Dodge’s AutoStick feature, which allows manual gear shifting. The light steering response gives the Caravan a carlike feel and a smooth ride.

Expect a redesign in 2001, but for now, the Caravan comes from the Chrysler Town & Country design and the Chrysler and Plymouth Voyager. The Voyager.

The Range

Body Styles: four-door van
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.3-liter V-6
Transmissions: three-speed automatic, four-speed automatic
Models: Dodge Caravan, Dodge Caravan SE

What's New

The Dodge Caravan offers new colors and more standard equipment for the 2000 model year.

Exterior

Intermittent windshield wipers and a rear window wiper, a rear spoiler, 14-inch wheels, and power brakes provide just about the only standard features on the exterior of the 2000 Dodge Caravan. Those who want more out of their Dodge have to upgrade. Options include sunscreen glass, a camper/towing package, power heated mirrors, a keyless entry system, a lighted entry system, a rear window defroster, daytime running lights, a roof rack, power windows, alloy wheels, and an anti-theft alarm system.

Exterior specifications measure in at 76.8 inches wide, 68.5 inches high, and 186.3 inches long, with a wheelbase of 113.3 inches. The Caravan clears the ground at 5.4 inches and has a curb weight of 3536 pounds.

Interior

Innovative interior easy-out rolling seats and a driver’s side sliding door highlight features that consumers love. The sliding door remains optional on the base Caravan and comes standard on everything else, but non-power activation may be a hidden inconvenience. This feature becomes power-operated for 2001. Seats can be released and removed.

Consumers also enjoy standard bucket cloth seating for five (with the option to upgrade to seven), a center console, rear cup holders, front cup holders, power steering, a AM/FM/cassette audio system, and shopping bag hooks built into the back of the rear seat. Opt for child seats, a CD changer, and a tilt steering wheel. Even air-conditioning remains an upgrade in the Caravan.

Rear hip room measures in at 61.3 inches; rear head room totals 40.1 inches; rear legroom reaches 36.6 inches; and rear shoulder room totals 63.8 inches. Cargo volume starts at a minimum of 14 cubic feet. With a bit of seat maneuverability, one can get 143 cubic feet of cargo space in the 2000 Dodge Caravan.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 Dodge Caravan proves highly maneuverable and easy to control, with exceptional handling. The sport model features specially tuned shocks and springs. Self-leveling and heavy-duty suspensions provide upgrades.

Safety

Standard safety features on the 2000 Dodge Caravan remain minimal with driver and passenger front airbags. Anti-lock brakes provide an optional feature on even the base model of the Caravan. Side-impact airbags do not come on any Caravans for 2000. A panic alarm comes at an extra cost.

The IIHS rates the Caravan “Marginal? in its frontal-offset test. NHTSA crash test ratings list passenger and driver safety at four out of five stars. Side-impact front collisions earn five stars, but the side-impact rear only receives three out of five stars.

Identifix reliability ratings find a number of problems, the first being an occasional failure of the exhaust gas recirculation solenoid. This applies to the 3.3-liter and 3.8-liter V-6 engines only. This problem may cause the check engine light to come on.
