INTRO: The Dodge Durango returns for 2012 bringing its rugged full-size SUV demeanor, upscale features and seating for seven along for the ride. The Durango is a well equipped family hauler offered with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Trims for the Durango are SXT, Crew, R/T, and the range-topping Citadel.
The Durango's styling borrows heavily from the RAM full-size pickup, seen especially in the upright grille and swept forward headlights. The Citadel we drove featured chrome mesh inserts in the grille, 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, and chrome accents on the running boards.
PERFORMANCE: Base power for the Durango comes from a 290 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, while an available 5.7-liter HEMI V8 sends 360 horsepower through a 6-speed automatic transmission.
FUEL ECONOMY: Here are the highest and lowest EPA estimates for fuel economy:
FEATURES: Our Citadel test model came fully loaded including leather seating with heated and cooled front seats, as well as heated second row seats. The available heated steering wheel is a welcomed feature for cold mornings while the 115-volt wall-style AC power outlet provides added versatility.
Also standard on the Citadel is the 9-speaker premium stereo with subwoofer and auxiliary inputs. The 30-gigabyte hard drive and Uconnect Bluetooth system with voice control round out the advanced technology onboard.
A recommended option for those with children is the rear seat entertainment system, with 7-inch flip-down monitor, in dash 6-disc CD/DVD player with remote and two wireless headphones.
SAFETY: Standard safety features include electronic stability control, active head restraints, tire pressure monitoring, trailer sway damping and a full array of front and side impact airbags.
PRICING/WARRANTY: Base MSRP for the 2012 Dodge Durango is $28,995. A range-topping all-wheel-drive Citadel model starts at $42,995.
WARRANTY: The Durango is backed by a transferable 3-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty, and a transferable 5-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
CLOSING: With luxury car features, available HEMI power and full-time all-wheel drive, the 2012 Dodge Durango is an attractive full-size SUV with some of the strongest attributes in the segment.
