2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Review

Upgraded fun for the whole family.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan has consistently been one of the best-selling minivans on the market for a good reason. Comfort, performance, and style represent its high points and help set it apart from the competition. The Grand Caravan feels pleasant to ride in, fun to drive, and it looks good. It is a reliable family vehicle that does not get too expensive with the entry-level Grand Caravan SE. The wide model range and long list of optional features gives potential buyers a lot of choices for the vehicle they need and the price they want to pay.

However, the Grand Caravan’s optional features can get pricey when buyers start to load up the van. The standard equipment offering seems decent, but many drivers feel like the lower-end models lack some basic amenities. Even with an occasionally premium price, the Dodge Grand Caravan still offers a good value.

The Range

Body Styles: minivan
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 3.3-liter six-cylinder, 3.8-liter six-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, three–speed automatic
Models: Dodge Grand Caravan SE, Dodge Grand Caravan Sport, Dodge Grand Caravan EX, Dodge Grand Caravan ES

What's New

The Dodge Grand Caravan shows off a complete redesign in 2001.

Exterior

Measuring in at 200.5 inches long, the 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan is a fairly large minivan. Featuring curved, graceful styling, this popular minivan looks attractive. Steel wheels come standard, while alloy wheels and a roof rack are available as separate options.

Interior

The 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan has a spacious interior that, for the most part, gives passengers a good amount of room. The second row of seats feels a bit cramped, which limits legroom and might make them a little uncomfortable for adults. Standard amenities for all Grand Caravan models include an AM/FM radio, air-conditioning, a front console, and a cargo net. However, between optional features and model selection, drivers can get almost any standard vehicle amenity in the Grand Caravan, including power seats, power heated mirrors, cruise control, three-zone climate control, Infinity premium speakers, and a CD player.

Performance & Handling

The 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan offers excellent performance overall. Drivers feel as if they are operating a much smaller car, rather than a large minivan. The base, four-cylinder engine only offers mediocre performance, but the six-cylinder engines offer good acceleration for a vehicle this size. In addition, the Grand Caravan turns almost as well as a car, making it surprisingly agile. However, the Grand Caravan is a large vehicle, so occasionally, its bulk and weight makes some tight driving conditions feel a bit more difficult to handle.

Safety

The 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan has good overall safety performance and a nice range of built-in equipment. It includes dual front airbags, child safety seat anchors, electronic brake force distribution, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes as standard safety features on all models. Side curtain airbags remain available as an option.

EPA Fuel Economy

Dodge Grand Caravan 2.4-liter four-cylinder: 18/22 mpg city/highway
Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3-liter six-cylinder: 16/22 mpg city/highway
Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8-liter six-cylinder: 16/22 mpg city/highway
