2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan is a four-door minivan that is available in SE, SXT, Crew, and R/T models. Even though it faces stiff competition from models offered by Toyota, Honda, and Nissan, the Grand Caravan is still positioned at the top of the minivan market. There are a number of reasons why. People will be most attracted to its beautiful interior, which easily seats up to seven people. This is plenty enough room to fit an average small family. Along with its modest exterior style, the interior is packed with a number of amenities that make each ride as enjoyable as the next. To add in more appeal, the Grand Caravan is loaded with safety features.

New For 2013

There are several aspects of the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan that are brand new for its year:

  • A price reduction of $1000.
  • An entertainment system that is dual-screen, plays Blu-Ray discs, and has an input that allows video game systems to be connected.
  • Two USB ports make it possible to charge mobile phones and other compatible devices.
  • Trailer-sway control now comes standard

All models of the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan have approximately a 203-inch length, 79-inch width, 68-inch height, six-inch ground clearance, and 121-inch wheelbase. It has a gross weight of 6050 pounds. Its bulky dimensions coupled with an aggressive stance make it an attractive minivan and gives it a commanding presence on the road.

Depending on the model chosen, available features will vary. However, all models come standard with a manual-sliding side door on both driver and passenger sides. Power-sliding side doors are optional. Also, all models come standard with 17-inch wheels. Although its design is nice, the Grand Caravan is lacking in features compared to the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and Nissan Quest. However, it does have unique perks, such as the Stow-n-Place rack system on the roof, that make it attractive.

Interior & Cargo

The interior of the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan is roomy enough to comfortably fit seven passengers, which will accommodate most small families nicely. Cloth upholstery comes standard, but may be upgraded to leather. In the front, there are low-back bucket seats. The second row sports a 60/40 split bench seat, while the third row has Stow n Go bucket seats. Seating is comfortable and there is plenty of room for passengers to maneuver.

The features of the Grand Caravan’s interior will surely thrill. The design of the detailed instrument panel is unique and outstanding. There is chrome throughout to give a classy appeal. The colorful backlighting is breathtaking. There are plenty of storage areas to make room for groceries, camping equipment, and other miscellaneous items. In addition, the second and third row seats are simple to remove with a one-touch folding feature, allowing for larger items to be carried. Depending on the model, features will vary. R/T models sport a super console, which is capable of housing a large soda bottle in between the front seats.

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan is equipped with anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist. It also has traction control and an electronic stability system. Power-adjustable pedals, rear parking sensors, and a backup camera are optional. Active front head restraints are installed. The front seats come standard with side-impact airbags, while the three rows of rear seating have side curtain airbags. Active front head restraints also come standard. The Grand Caravan also features side-impact door beams and child safety door locks. The NHTSA gives the Grand Caravan excellent safety ratings for front and side-impact crashes.

Driving Experience

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan luxury model is powered by a 3.6-liter, V-6 engine that cranks out 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It is combined with a six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and auto-manual. This setup provides enough power to handle everyday driving situations nicely. Only front-wheel drive is available, so it is not suited for off-roading. Fuel economy averages around 17/25 mpg city/highway, 20 mpg combined.

On the road, the Grand Caravan is nice and smooth, primarily due to its independent front strut suspension with a stabilizer bar and coil springs teamed with a semi-independent rear torsion beam suspension with coil springs. Its Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system enables drivers to move gracefully through traffic and go around sharp corners easily. Stopping the minivan could not be easier, partly due to its superb brake system that features brake assist. The only possible downside to the ride is a wide turning radius, which makes it difficult to park and make U-turns. Overall, it is a very comfortable and drivable vehicle, especially given that it is a minivan.
