1999 Dodge Intrepid Review

A spacious, practical four-door family sedan.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 1999 Dodge Intrepid is a sporty sedan with a dashing style more suggestive of a coupe. The Intrepid was first introduced in 1992, and in 1998 moved into its second generation. The second generation Intrepid borrowed styling cues from the ESX show car. Certainly one of the most attractive sedans in the Chrysler lineup, the Dodge Intrepid makes use of Chrysler’s bold cab-forward design. When it was first introduced, the Intrepid was one of the first models in years to cut into the large field of market share occupied by the ever-popular Ford Taurus. With its attractive styling and abundance of interior space, the Intrepid upped the ante on the Taurus and earned itself a good portion of the market segment to command.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 2.7-liter V-6, 3.2-liter V-6
Transmission: four-speed automatic
Models: Dodge Intrepid, Dodge Intrepid ES

What's New

With the model having been completely redesigned the year prior, Dodge introduced only minor changes to the Intrepid for 1999. These include the addition of chrome badging and improved floor carpeting. Additionally, an engine immobilizer was made available for the Intrepid ES model.

Exterior

Looks are one of the 1999 Intrepid’s strongest features. Its Chrysler cab-forward design is more suggestive of a sporty coupe than a four-door family sedan. With Dodge’s trademark crosshair grille out front, flanked by two slightly oversized headlights, the 1999 Dodge Intrepid is bold-looking and impressive to behold. Additional 1999 Intrepid exterior features include body-colored bumpers, body-colored side moldings, rocker panel extensions, body-colored grille moldings, dual power remote exterior mirrors, and monotone paint. The Base model comes equipped with 15-inch steel wheels and offers the option of upgrading to 16-inch wheels. Meanwhile, the ES model comes standard with 16-inch silver aluminum wheels.

Interior

In addition to its attractive exterior styling, interior space is of the Intrepid's strongest suits. The Base model offers standard seating for five and available seating for six. The ES only offers seating for five. Bucket seats are standard for both the Base and ES models while a 50/50-split bench seat is also available for the Base. Additional Intrepid interior features include adjustable front headrests, four-way driver seat controls, six-way power driver seat controls for the ES, and as an option for the base model. Cloth seat trim and a leather gear shift are standard on the ES and available for the Base model.

Performance & Handling

The 1999 Dodge Intrepid also delivers handling and performance that go above and beyond the call of duty for a four-door family sedan. This can be attributed to steering and suspension features such as a front and rear anti-roll bars, a multi-link rear suspension, rack & pinion steering, and four-wheel disc brakes. The line-topping ES version comes with a more formidable 3.2-liter V-6 under the hood.

Safety

1999 Dodge Intrepid safety features include available four-wheel anti-lock brakes for the Base that are standard for the ES, available daytime running lights, driver and passenger front-impact airbags, and a panic alarm that’s available for the Base and comes standard on the ES. There is also an available option for an engine immobilizer on the Intrepid ES model.
