Dodge's player in the competitive mid-size crossover market is the 2010 Journey. Based on Dodge's Avenger sedan platform, the Journey is designed for buyers who want the convenience and functionality of a minivan wrapped in a road hugging contemporary package.
The Journey comes in three trim levels; the SE, an uprated SXT and the top of the line R/T. All display an unmistakable Dodge family resemblance highlighted by the "cross-hair" chrome front grille flowing rearward to the upswept lift gate with integral spoiler.
Sculpted fender flares are home to standard 16-inch wheels on the base SE or optional 19-inch chrome-clad cast aluminum wheels on the SXT and R/T models.
The base engine on the Journey is a 2.4-liter inline 4 that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound feet of torque, sent to the front wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission. SXT and R/T trims come equipped with a 3.5-liter V6, putting out 235 horsepower and 232 pound feet of torque sent to the front wheels or available all wheel drive via a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Here are the highest and lowest EPA estimates for fuel economy:
All models provide seating for five. Optional third-row seating on upper trim levels boost capacity to seven. The fold-flat second and split-folding third row seats provide for maximum flexibility.
Functionality dominates interior design with multiple storage cubbies tucked away under seats and beneath the rear compartment floors. Leather seating surfaces are available and the list of electronic communications and entertainment features tops out with the Multimedia system that includes DVD, high-end audio, a 30-gigabyte internal hard drive and Navigation system.
The Journey relies on four-wheel antilock disc brakes equipped with brake assist, electronic stability, and traction control across its model line-up. State of the art front and side airbags protect all passengers.
Base MSRP for the Journey SE is $20,490. An all wheel drive R/T will start at $28,545. The Journey is backed by a 5-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
With available seating for seven, the capability of all wheel drive, and the smooth ride of a sedan-based platform, the 2010 Dodge Journey covers the basics for a successful crossover...and then some.
