The 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 includes a more powerful version of the Cummins turbodiesel engine, now rated at 610 lb-ft of torque. A power sunroof and Sirius Satellite Radio are newly available on Quad Cab models.
Regular cab Ram 3500s can be equipped with a 6.3-foot or eight-foot cargo bed. With the 6.3-foot bed, the Ram rides a 120.5-inch wheelbase and stretches to 207.7 inches in overall length. With the extended bed, the Ram measures 229.7 inches long overall and sits on a 140.5-inch wheelbase. Quad Cab models also come with the choice of the two bed sizes and are 20 inches longer in both wheelbase and overall length. Regular cab Ram 3500 models have dual rear wheels, but Quad Cab models can be equipped with either dual or single rear wheels.
The 2005 Dodge Ram boasts a roomy interior in all models. The 3500 regular cab offers a generous 40.9 inches of headroom, 65.1 inches of hip room, and 41 inches of legroom in its 40/20/40-split front bench seats. The Quad Cab adds a rear seat with spots for three people, 64.6 inches of hip room, 40 inches of headroom, 36.4 inches of legroom, and 66.7 inches of shoulder room. It will fit three adults but is probably more comfortable for two for long rides.
The base ST trim comes standard with air-conditioning but is equipped with wind-up windows, manual door locks, and vinyl upholstery. Standard features include a front console with storage, front cup holders, door pockets, seatback storage, power steering, a tilt-adjustable steering wheel, cargo area light, and a four-speaker AM/FM CD-controller stereo system. On Quad Cab ST models, a folding rear seatback and rear cup holders are also included.
Moving up to the SLT trim, cloth upholstery, power door locks, mirrors and windows, front reading lights and floor mats, a passenger vanity mirror, a trip computer, compass, in-dash CD player, and wiring for an in-car phone are all standard. Optional add-ons include a navigation system and Bluetooth hands-free technology.
Performance & Handling
The base engine for the Ram 3500 is a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 that generates 330 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission with overdrive and rear drive is standard. A five-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive are available as options. Drivers looking for maximum hauling power will want to upgrade to the 5.9-liter, inline-six-cylinder, Cummins diesel engine. This industrial-strength powerhouse is capable of 325 horsepower and 610 lb-ft of torque. This engine can be connected to a four-speed automatic transmission, but a six-speed manual is standard. With the diesel engine the 2005 Ram 3500 can tow over 14,000 pounds.
Dual front airbags with passenger airbag deactivation, side curtain airbags, front height-adjustable seatbelts with pretensioners, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and halogen headlamps are standard on all 2005 Dodge Ram 3500s. Daytime running lights are optional on all models. The SLT trim adds illuminated entry, a panic alarm, remote keyless entry, and power door locks. SLT Quad Cab models include rear child safety locks. A content theft-deterrent alarm system is optional on SLT models.
