2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Review

A true work truck that is also fun to drive.

Reviewed by Automotive on

If there is one word that can be used to describe the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500, it is powerful. Like the 2500, it comes standard with a 5.7-liter, Hemi V-8 capable of generating 345 horsepower (hp). For those who want even more power, there is a 5.9-liter, six-cylinder, Cummins turbo diesel engine, which can put out an astonishing 610 lb-ft of torque. If it is equipped with the diesel engine, a regular cab with dual wheels can tow loads up to 16,250 pounds. Yet it is also surprisingly comfortable and easy to drive. There are also many driver-friendly features including cabs with lots of room and adjustable pedals to make it easy to fit behind the wheel. New hydroforming construction technology makes the frame and bed even stronger, ensuring easier driving and larger payloads. Some observers have called the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 models the best heavy-duty work trucks on the market. It is easy to see why: they offer a combination of sophistication and power that you will not find elsewhere. Yet, Dodge has also created a more luxurious model in the Laramie, which is designed as more of a family cruiser.

What's New

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 is now available with the new Mega Cab, which is the largest crew cab on the market. It is capable of comfortably seating four adults, so it should be a favorite with both families and crews of workmen heading to the job site. In addition to the Mega Cab, Dodge completely redesigned all Ram interiors for 2006; a new dash, seats, and radios are among a few of the changes. The body has also been slightly redesigned to make it more stylish, and the bed is a little shorter in order to accommodate all the extra room in the cab.

Even though the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 is a powerful truck with dual wheels, it has a very distinctive look. Dodge has outdone itself with the styling and the front end. Beds are a few inches shorter, but a full-length eight-foot bed is available as an option. Dual wheels are also available as an option on all 3500 models.

The 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 adds a new dash, center console, and seats. Mega Cab models are the first pickup trucks to feature reclining seats in the rear, and it offers the most legroom and cargo room of any truck on the road. Laramie buyers can choose from a wide variety of options, including a rear seat DVD-player to entertain the kids. Other luxury options available for the Laramie include leather seating and dual-zone climate control.

Performance & Handling

Despite the weight and power, the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 is a very comfortable truck that is easy to drive and steer. Reviewers compared the handling to that of a half-ton truck. Independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering make the two-wheel-drive (2WD) model easy to steer. Like the other Ram offerings, it offers more power and torque than its competitors from Ford and GM. The standard 5.7-liter, Hemi V-8 is rated at 345 hp. To make driving easier, an electronic four-wheel drive and a five-speed automatic transmission are available. A four-speed automatic with overdrive is available for the diesel model.

Safety ratings are not available for the 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 because it is classed as a work truck. Yet, it should be a very safe vehicle. While it is the only Ram to receive a safety rating, the 1500 received the highest rating of ""good"" from the IIHS. Standard safety features on this truck include four-wheel disc brakes, Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS), and electronic brake force distribution. Optional safety features include side-curtain airbags. Laramie features many of the same safety devices as Dodge cars including an engine immobilizer and child safety locks.
