2000 Dodge Ram Van 3500 Review

Good for hauling, bad for modern redesign.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2000 Dodge Ram Van 3500 may seem archaic since it hasn’t had a redesign in nearly three decades; however that lends itself to a practical price. However, it doesn’t need to change anything to keep up with the competition.

One-third of the components got updated a couple of years ago, and Dodge says that a wheelchair lift can be added and the roofline easily raised for the physically challenged.

The Range

Body Styles: three-door van
Engines: 5.2-liter V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Dodge Ram Van 3500, Dodge Ram Van 3500 Maxi

What's New

Minor changes for the 2000 Dodge Ram Van 3500 include hood-mounted windshield washer nozzles and chrome-clad wheels. Sealing has been given a boost to reduce outside noise and the elements. Vans also get a six-speaker audio system standard.

The 2000 Dodge Ram Van 3500 gives buyers eight colors to choose from. Exterior features include a four-wheel anti-lock brake system, an optional chrome step bumper, a keyless entry system, a lighted entry system, limited-slip differential, power exterior mirrors, a rear window defroster, intermittent windshield wipers, flush-mounted halogen headlights, and sunscreen glass. Sixteen-inch silver steel wheels round out the bottom of the Van. Metallic paint remains optional.

An optional camper/towing package allows for a maximum towing capacity of 7600 pounds. Maximum payload totals 3942 pounds. The 3500 Maxi has a bit less towing capacity with 7450 pounds. Payload on the Maxi comes in at 3772 pounds.

The Van measures in at 205.2 inches long and has a gross weight of 8700 pounds. Curb weight totals 4758 pounds, and it sits on a wheelbase of 127.6 inches.

The 2000 Dodge Ram Van 3500 comes with a list of interior features. Enjoy air-conditioning, an AM/FM/cassette/CD audio system, an under-hood light, a sport steering wheel, a front installed door trim panel, a heavy-duty black vinyl floor mat in the front compartment, a cargo compartment light, bucket vinyl seating in camel or mist gray, cruise control, power door locks, and power windows.

The dashboard has plenty of amenities to assist drivers in their journeys: a warning signal for low washer fluid; vacuum fluorescent, digital display for both the odometer and trip odometer; a single, low-note horn; a voltmeter on the instrument panel; an oil pressure gauge; a warning buzzer for key-in-ignition and seat belts; a digital clock; analog gauges; and several indicator warning lamps.

Passengers enjoy 40.5 inches of front headroom, 39 inches of front legroom, and 68 inches of front shoulder room.

Performance & Handling

The 3500 comes with a 5.2-liter V-8 engine. Passengers enjoy a smoother ride with a heavy-duty front suspension with upper and lower A arms, computer-selected coil springs, heavy-duty gas-charged shock absorbers, a heavy-duty rear suspension with longitudinal leaf springs, and a front stabilizer bar.

Safety features on the Ram Cargo Van remain minimal with driver and passenger front airbags and a rear-wheel anti-lock brake system. Side airbags remain unavailable.

Seat belts come with emergency locking retractors and front three-point, height-adjustable belts. The steering column absorbs energy, and crumple zones and knee bolsters round out the extra safety precautions. Consumers can opt for additional safety measures to prevent theft. An optional vehicle anti-lockout device, valet lockout, wheel locks, and a locking fuel filler door or cap can be purchased for the 2000 Dodge Ram Van 3500 for an extra cost.
