2000 Dodge Ram Wagon 1500 Review

Offers slightly more than its counterparts.

Overview

The 2000 Dodge Ram Wagon 1500 marks the smallest model in the Dodge Ram Wagon family, and it also seems to be the safest. Dodge says it will discontinue the line in a year or two, and considering there has been no redesign in almost three decades, it should not change the Wagons much in the next couple of years.

The Range

Body Styles: three-door van
Engines: 3.9-liter V-6, 5.2-liter V-8
Transmissions: three-speed automatic, four-speed automatic
Models: Dodge Ram Wagon 1500

What's New

Like its sister models, the 3500 Maxi Wagon and the 2500 passenger van, the 2000 Dodge Ram Wagon 1500 has new hood-mounted windshield washer nozzles. Chrome-clad wheels also get added. Sealing upgrades to keep out the elements and outer noise.

Exterior

The 1500 passenger van measures in at 79.8 inches wide, 79.5 inches high, and a bit shorter in length than the 2500 at 187.2 inches. It clears the ground by 6.8 inches, has a curb weight of 4577 pounds, and a wheelbase of 109 inches.

Future owners can choose from several exterior paint colors, which also come on the 3500 and the 2500: black, bright white, Colorado red, dark spruce metallic, hunter green metallic, light arctic gray, and medium red metallic.

Standard features include power brakes, styled steel 15-inch wheels, intermittent windshield wipers, and a rear-wheel anti-lock brake system.

This model also offers towing, with a camper/towing package available as an upgrade. Other exterior van options include a chrome step bumper, a keyless entry system, a lighted entry system, limited-slip differential, a rear window defroster, sunscreen glass, an anti-theft alarm system, chrome wheels, and power exterior mirrors.

Interior

Camel tan and mist gray adorn cloth bucket seats inside the 1500 passenger van. Like the other Wagon models, drivers enjoy power steering, a tilt steering wheel, air-conditioning, a front ashtray, an automatic drive indicator on the dashboard, a cargo area light, front reading lights, a cigar lighter in the front seating area, a clock, a full console with an open storage box in the dashboard, courtesy lights, front cup holders, fifth-row bench seats, plastic and rubber in the load area, and an AM/FM/cassette audio system.

Personalize your van with an optional power driver’s seat; 12-passenger vinyl seating; cruise control; power windows and door locks; an AM/FM/CD audio system; and infinity audio. Rear-seat passengers cool down with optional rear air-conditioning or warm up with a rear heater.

The 2000 Dodge Ram Wagon 1500 offers 40.5 inches of front headroom, 39.3 inches of rear headroom, 40.5 inches of rear legroom, and 43.9 inches of rear shoulder room.

Performance & Handling

The 2000 Dodge Ram Wagon 1500 has abundantly more to offer in the area of performance and handling than the 2500 and 3500 Wagons—rear drive; front short and long arm suspensions; a front anti-roll bar; coil front springs; heavy-duty front shocks; leaf rear suspension and leaf rear springs; heavy-duty rear shocks; rack and pinion steering; front disc and rear drum brakes; front vented disc brakes; and a full-size steel spare wheel and tire.

Safety

Safety features on the 2000 Dodge Ram Wagon 1500 passenger van include driver and passenger front airbags and rear-wheel anti-lock brakes. Side-impact bars; an under-hood light; oil pressure, battery, lights on, key, and low washer fluid warnings; rear anti-lock brakes; and a center high-mounted stop light add to a safe driving experience.
