2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500 Review

Class-leading cargo space and a multitude of seating options.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500 is a European-engineered, full-size van that caters to people who want refinement, flexibility, and utility in one package. It replaced the Dodge Ram Wagon in 2003. The European engineering comes from a Mercedes-Benz van that has been redesigned to accommodate the American commercial market. The Sprinter comes as a passenger van or a cargo van.

All models feature a 2.7-liter, five-cylinder engine. The Sprinter 2500 comes with all of the basic standard features. The passenger models seat up to 10 people. The cargo vans come with only the front passenger and driver seats.

The model names correspond to the wheelbase of each trim. Each model comes in both regular-roof and high-roof heights. The high roof adds nine inches of space.

The Range

What's New

Dodge adds an electronic stability program as a standard safety feature. The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500 also gets new features and options for 2004, such as a heated windshield with rain sensors. Dodge also revises the 16-inch aluminum wheels, fabric choices, and options packages to make them easier to understand.

Exterior

The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500 comes in three trims levels and two roof heights. Trim levels include the 118, 140, and 158. All trims, except the 158, offer both a regular roof and a high roof; the 158 trim only comes in the High Roof model. The base model of the 2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500 comes equipped with power heated mirrors, 15-inch steel wheels with all-season tires, variable intermittent windshield wipers, a rear defogger, and an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. All models have a maximum capacity of 247 cubic feet and a 5000-pound towing capacity. It features a rear barn-style door. The regular roof van stands 93.5 inches tall and the high roof models stand at 102 inches.

The van’s exterior has a bold, boxy appearance; especially the high roof models. It offers a heated windshield with a rain sensor, and the cargo van has 16-inch aluminum wheels. The distinct Dodge grille gets prominently displayed in chrome, and the black bumpers set off the body color and grille.

Interior

The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500’s interior comes in only one color. The passenger models come equipped with cloth upholstery, bucket front seats, power steering, climate control, external temperature display, a two-speaker stereo system, a 12V front power outlet, and a third-row seat.

The cockpit looks well laid-out and the gauges seem easy to read. Dodge uses quite a bit of plastic on the doors and dashboard. The barn-style rear doors open to reveal a cavernous cargo area. The cargo van has only a driver and passenger seat, but the passenger van has second- and third-row seats. The materials used appear to be of average quality and only come in gray. The center stack looks utilitarian and plain. Entry into this vehicle proves difficult due to the high step up, but once inside, you have a clear view of the front and sides. The rear view looks a bit limited in passenger models due to the second- and third-row seats.

Performance & Handling

The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500 comes standard with a 2.7-liter, five-cylinder, turbo diesel engine that produces 154 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. It comes equipped with rear drive and a five-speed automatic transmission. The independent suspension system consists of front MacPherson struts and solid live axle rear suspensions. Dodge offers no other engine for this car.

The engine produces enough power for city driving, but the acceleration provides only adequate passing power on the highway. The engine remains relatively quiet, even when idling. In addition, the ride feels smooth and comfortable due to its long wheelbase. The handling remains controlled and the steering responsive. Maneuvering in this car seems easy, although it experiences a lot of body lean when turning a corner at an accelerated speed. Road noise remains noticeable, but not overbearing.

Safety

The standard safety features of the 2004 Dodge Sprinter 2500 includes four-wheel antilock brakes, vented front disc and solid rear disc brakes, stability and traction controls, driver and passenger airbags, electronic brake force distribution, and child seat anchors.
