2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Review

A cargo van with a lot of space or a passenger van that seats a lot of people.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500 is a full-size van that caters to people who want refinement, flexibility, and utility in one package. Dodge’s other van model, the Sprinter 2500, looks almost the same as the 3500. The main difference is in the payload. The Sprinter 3500 has a higher payload rating than the 2500 model. It also debuted as a replacement for the Dodge Ram Wagon in 2003.

Each model features a 2.7-liter, five-cylinder, Mercedes-Benz, turbo diesel engine. The Dodge Sprinter 3500 comes with all of the basic standard features, and the passenger models seat up to 10 people. The cargo vans come with only the front-passenger and driver seats. The model names correspond to the wheelbase of each trim. Each model offers both regular roof and high roof heights. The high roof adds nine inches of space.

What's New

Dodge adds an electronic stability program as a standard safety feature. The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500 also gets new features and options, like a heated windshield with rain sensors. Dodge also revises the 16-inch aluminum wheels, fabric choices, and option packages to make them easier to understand.

The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500 comes in three trims and two roof heights. Trim levels include the 118, 140, and 158. All trims, except the 158, offer both a regular roof and a high roof; the 158 trim only comes with a high roof. The base model comes equipped with power heated mirrors, four hydraulic disc brakes, 15-inch steel wheels with all-season tires, variable intermittent windshield wipers, a tool kit with a hydraulic jack, a rear defogger, and an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. All models have a maximum capacity of 247 cubic feet and a 5000-pound towing capacity. It features a rear barn-style door. The regular roof van stands 93.5 inches tall and the high roof models stands 102 inches tall.

On the exterior, the Sprinter 3500 shows off a bold, boxy appearance, especially on the high roof models. It has halogen headlights, manual exterior mirrors, and an available heated windshield with a rain sensor. The distinct Dodge grille gets prominently displayed in chrome, and the black bumpers set off the body color and grille.

The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500 offers only one interior color—gray. The passenger models come equipped with cloth upholstery, reclining bucket front seats, a passenger-seat storage bin, climate control, external temperature display, a two-speaker stereo system, fire extinguisher prep, a 12V front power outlet, and a third-row seat. Several option packages focus more on practicality than comfort. The Comfort Seating Group package includes the most comfort-oriented options, including manual lumbar support and luxury bucket front seats.

The cockpit is laid out well and the gauges are easy to read. Dodge uses quite a bit of plastic on the doors and dashboard. The barn-style rear doors open to reveal a cavernous cargo area. The cargo van has only a driver and passenger seat, but the passenger van includes second- and third-row seats. The materials used appear to be of average quality. Furthermore, the center stack looks utilitarian and plain.

Performance & Handling

The 2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500 comes standard with a 2.7-liter, five-cylinder, turbo diesel engine that produces 154 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. It uses rear drive and a five-speed automatic transmission. The independent suspension system consists of MacPherson struts on the front and a solid live axle rear suspension. Dodge offers no other engine option for this vehicle.

The engine produces enough power for city driving, but acceleration on the highway is only adequate. The engine remains relatively quiet, even when idling. The ride feels smooth and comfortable due to its long wheelbase. The handling remains controlled and the rack and pinion power steering feels responsive. Maneuvering in this car seems easy, although it experiences a lot of body lean when turning a corner at an accelerated speed. Road noise remains noticeable, but not overbearing. Entry into this vehicle proves difficult due to the high step up, but once inside, you enjoy a clear view out the front and side windows. Rear viewing remains limited in passenger models due to the second- and third-row seats.

The standard safety features of the 2004 Dodge Sprinter 3500 includes four-wheel anti-lock brakes, vented front disc and solid rear disc brakes, stability and traction controls, driver and passenger airbags, electronic brake force distribution, and child seat anchors.
