2002 Dodge Stratus Review

A sprightly and stylish alternative to other models in its class.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2002 Dodge Stratus coupe uses the same platform as the Mitsubishi Galant. DaimlerChrysler builds and designs both autos in its Illinois plant. The shorter wheelbases classify them as compact coupes. The Stratus sedan comes in SE and ES trim levels. It can be fitted with a V-6 engine or a four-cylinder.

The company revamps its striking coupe with slicker styling. Dodge adds a more powerful V-6.

The Dodge Stratus sedan provides an alternative for the coupe. It has an identical sporty interior with attractive materials and white-faced gauges.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, sedan
Engines: 2.4-liter four-cylinder, 2.7-liter V-6, 3.0-liter V-6
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Dodge Stratus SE, Dodge Stratus SE Plus, Dodge Stratus ES, Dodge Stratus R/T, Dodge Stratus SXT

What's New

New sedans join the fleet, including the R/T, SE Plus, and SXT. An SXT coupe also starts new. All the Stratus models receive a new audio system and a “battery saver.” For coupe models, a CD changer provides an option and sedan models have the option of both cassette and CD players. The R/T coupe includes a standard Infinity stereo with the Touring Package. New paint colors available for sedans include Light Almond Pearl, Onyx Green, and Steel Blue. New paint colors for coupes include Dark Titanium and Cafe Latte. The Stratus sedan offers a new option of side airbags.

Exterior

Chrysler’s Sebring uses the identical side panels and roof as the Stratus, but they have different rear and front styling. Dodge’s crossbar-style grille gives a different look than the Sebring series. The 2002 Dodge Stratus sits on a wheelbase of 108 inches and measures 191 inches long. The SE uses 15-inch tires and 16-inch wheels come on the ES. Standard features include a rear defroster and power mirrors.

Interior

A three-place bench seat in the rear and bucket seats in the front make up the five-passenger arrangement. The rear bench folds down to add cargo space. Although the trunk opening is high and small, the volume reaches an ample 16 cubic feet. A plentiful list of standards includes cruise control, air-conditioning, a tilt wheel, a stereo with a cassette player, and power windows and locks.

Standard features for the SE include power locks, power windows, air-conditioning, and an AM/FM stereo. More luxury for the SE Plus includes a CD player, cruise control, power seats, and keyless entry.

Performance & Handling

The 2002 Dodge Stratus SE base contains a 150-horsepower, four-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine mated with an automatic four-speed transmission. A 2.7-liter V-6 comes standard on the Stratus ES and optionally on the Stratus SE. This 200-hp engine comes from the full-size Intrepid. The Dodge Stratus offers a pleasant drive for a family sedan. When the Stratus R/T joins the segment, that perception may change.

The V-6 remains quiet and potent; however, the four-cylinder performs with eagerness and satisfies most owners. Additional noise under the hood stems from the small engine. The Stratus drives and maneuvers easily. The ride usually feels smooth, even though harsh roadway produces unpleasant reactions.

Safety

The 2002 Dodge Stratus offers an airbag system that protects the rear and front occupants in case of a side crash. Other features include a center rear seat belt, a latch system for child seats, and multi-stage airbags. Anti-lock brakes provide an optional feature.

EPA Fuel Economy

Dodge Stratus SE: 19/27 mpg city/highway
Dodge Stratus SE Plus: 19/27 mpg city/highway
Dodge Stratus ES: 18/26 mpg city/highway
Dodge Stratus R/T: 17/25 mpg city/highway
Dodge Stratus SXT: 19/27 mpg city/highway
