2014 Nissan GT-R Mug Run

We drive a 2014 Nissan GT-R on an urgent mission to replace a coffee mug.

A couple years ago, my coffee mug broke. So I borrowed a 2014 Nissan GT-R, drove 875 miles, and got another one. I'll admit a broken coffee mug is a pretty flimsy excuse to borrow $117,000 of exotic Japanese sports car. I'll even admit that spending 18 hours behind the wheel to retrieve said coffee mug is, at best, at little excessive. But I had my reasons. First, when I asked, Nissan said, "yes." More importantly, I was intently curious. After six years of production and numerous upgrades, how was the Nissan GT-R faring against newer competition? After all, the world has hardly stood still since it was introduced all the way back in the Bush administration. Back then, I drove a GT-R all the way to Rachel, Nevada--neighbor to the so-called Area 51--on similarly spurious reasons, and procured this now-broken vessel. Now, six years later, I wanted to know if the Nissan GT-R was still the world-beating giant-slayer I remembered when it first came out. Was the acceleration as mind-blowing as it once was? Could the car still turn heads? Would we get to Rachel, Nevada, before the store closed?

The open road. It beckons some of us, compels others, and maybe even scares off a few. But for most, one of the great joys of owning a car is enjoying it on a road trip, whether it's blasting down an Interstate, exploring the wilderness, or driving to your favorite annual hoedown. We love road trips, and we love telling you all about them in words and pictures, so come ride along with us as we hit the road and discover what's out there.
