2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti Review

An exotic ride that delivers fun and everyday usefulness.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti honors the Italian coachbuilder, Sergio Scaglietti who designed many of the popular Ferraris of the 1950s and 1960s. Powered by a V-12, the four-seat 612 is one of sharpest handling coupes on the road. The front mid-ship design helps the 612 in achieving that accomplishment, although it also contributes to somewhat awkward proportions and styling.

The Range

Body Styles: Coupe
Engines: 5.7-liter V-12
Transmissions: six-speed manual, six-speed automated manual
Models: 612 Scaglietti, 612 Scaglietti F1

What's New

The 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is unchanged from the 2005 introductory model.

Without a sexy body styling like its competitors, the 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti two-door, exotic sport coupe is still a car to receive notice. The 612 is offered in only one trim level and features 18-inch front wheels and 19-inch rear wheels. A product of the Pinifarini organization, the 612 is designed to recall the unique 375 MM Ferrari. It carries a teardrop profile, with the cockpit sitting back further than usual. The 612 also has short front and rear overhangs. This style creates clean lines and a lack of pompous show, which appeals to some, but not the vast majority of Ferrari fans.

Ferrari's prancing horse logo is located front and center of the mouth-shaped grille. Integrated headlight covers blend in neatly with the front fenders and hood when they are not in use. Buyers can request just about any paint color their hearts desire.

The two-door 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti coupe seats four people comfortably. The interior is fitted with aluminum trim and high-quality leather upholstery. Buyers can easily fit their specially-designed, six-piece optional luggage set in the 8.5-cubic-foot trunk. Standard dual-zone climate controls and a Bose audio system will help ensure a pleasant ride for all passengers.

Other interior conveniences include power driver's seat with memory, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and a navigation system. There is also a trip computer and a reverse sensing system.

Performance & Handling

Steering on the 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is light and intuitive, and the handling is nimble, making the 612 a delightful machine to drive. The V-12 roars appropriately as it delivers the immense power one would expect. Most drivers will be more than satisfied with the shift quality of the transmission, especially the new F1, which is a computer-controlled, electrohydraulic manual transmission with an automated clutch. Reportedly, the 612 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds and the car’s top speed is just under 200 mph.

The 2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is equipped with all the government-mandated safety equipment, of course. It goes beyond that by adding an antilock braking system (ABS) and traction, as well as stability control.

EPA Fuel Economy

612 Scaglietti: 10/15 mpg city/highway
612 Scaglietti w/ F1 transmission: 9/16 mpg city/highway
