2022 Ford EcoSport MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Smooth ride quality
  • Spacious interior
  • Intuitive infotainment on higher trims

Cons

  • Poor value
  • Unimpressive efficiency
  • Limited safety features

The EcoSport might be Ford's least appealing vehicle. This subcompact offers a cheaper alternative to the Bronco Sport or Escape, but its underpinnings—shared with the old Ford Fiesta—leave much to be desired. There are no changes for the 2022 model year. The EcoSport competes with other subcompact SUVs such as the Subaru Crosstrek, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Nissan Kicks.

What We Think

Sadly, the EcoSport is neither economical nor sporty. Fuel efficiency fails to impress, and although pricing is relatively competitive, every trim has a high five-year ownership cost, leading to Poor overall value ratings from IntelliChoice. The Sport moniker is lacking, too, as both engine options are noisy and underpowered.

Not that the EcoSport is wholly unlikeable. Rear-seat space is generous, and the newer infotainment software included on SE trims and above is easy to use. We also called out supple ride quality for the segment. Ford's smallest SUV is not without redeeming qualities, but every other car in the segment has more to offer.

Performance and Efficiency

Ford offers a pair of humble engine options under the hood of its smallest SUV. Most examples work with a 1.0-liter turbo three-cylinder developing 123 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque paired with a six-speed automatic and FWD. Testing a three-cylinder EcoSport Titanium, we recorded 0-60 mph in a pitiful 10.7 seconds, which makes this Ford one of the most sluggish vehicles on sale.

Fuel economy numbers from 2021 are unimpressive at just 27/29 mpg city/highway. For context, a front-wheel-drive Nissan Kicks with similar performance returns 31/36 mpg.

If you want AWD, you'll have to upgrade to the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder that puts out 166 hp and 149 lb-ft. When we brought one to our track, it reached 60 mph in a still sluggish 9.9 seconds. Efficiency fails to impress, too, at 23/29 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Features

The EcoSport only earns a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, which awards five-star ratings to the vast majority of modern vehicles that undergo its crash testing. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the SE and Titanium but standard on the EcoSport SES.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Interior space is one of the EcoSport's strong points. Cargo room is far behind that of the Bronco Sport, and although volume behind the rear seats just beats the Subaru Crosstrek's measurement, the Crosstrek has more space with the seats down.

Legroom (front/rear) Cargo Space (seats up/down)
2022 Ford EcoSport 42.9/36.7 inches 20.9/50.0 cubic feet
2022 Subaru Crosstrek 43.1/36.5 inches 20.8/55.3 cubic feet
2022 Ford Bronco Sport 42.4/36.9 inches 32.5/65.2 cubic feet

Technology

We struggle to think of an infotainment display smaller than the 4.2-inch unit in the base EcoSport S. Thankfully, the EcoSport SE, Titanium, and SES work with an 8.0-inch touchscreen with newer infotainment software plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation is included with the SES and Titanium. Six-speaker audio is standard, and seven- and 10-speaker systems are available.

Why Not a Maverick?

If you're looking for a small, inexpensive Ford, try the new Maverick instead. Yes, it's a pickup instead of an SUV, but the Maverick does almost everything better than the outdated EcoSport. The Maverick is more affordable, significantly more efficient, and offers more utility, not to mention it replaces the EcoSport's melted jellybean styling with that of a boxy mini truck.

Recommended Trim

We wouldn't recommend any version of the Ford EcoSport, but if we had to buy one, we'd go for the EcoSport SE. That way you can spend as little as possible while still having the better infotainment system and the option to get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
