With the 2010 Escape Hybrid, Ford has countered the perception that SUV's have to be gas guzzlers by designing one of the most fuel efficient sport utes on the road, today.
Carried over from 2009, the Escape Hybrid's inline-4 cylinder engine displaces 2.5 liters. Combined with 2 electric motors, it has a net output of 177 horsepower. Power is routed through a continuously variable transmission to the front wheels. All wheel drive models get a third electric engine, which drives the rear wheels.
The 4-wheel drive Escape gets 29 miles per gallon city, and 27 highway, while the front wheel drive model gets better fuel economy at 34 miles per gallon city, 31 miles per gallon highway.
For those seeking to add a hint of luxury to the mix, the Limited trim adds leather seating, moon roof, and Sync voice activated entertainment and communications system as standard equipment.
Initial base MSRP for the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid is $29,750 for the 2-wheel drive model. An all wheel drive Escape Limited with full options can cost about $40,000. The Escape Hybrid is backed by a 5-year, 60,000-mile power train warranty.
The Ford Escape Hybrid combines the versatility of an SUV with the economical and environmental benefits of a hybrid in a sharply styled package.
