2022 Ford Expedition MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Torquey, responsive V-6
  • Comfortable in all three rows
  • Good road manners

Cons

  • Some rough shifts from the 10-speed auto
  • Downsized engine still thirsty
  • Truck-like dashboard

The Expedition is the patriarch of all Ford SUVs, a full-size three-row aimed square at the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. Ford introduced an all-new redesigned Expedition for the 2019 model year complete with independent rear suspension and a twin-turbo V-6. For the 2022 Expedition, we expect a refreshed model with a slightly updated appearance, new colors, and some shuffled feature content.

What We Think

The Expedition drives better than any vehicle we'd expect in this segment. Its surprising on-road refinement helped the big Ford earn a win in our full-size SUV Big Test back in 2018. That said, the newly redesigned Chevrolet Tahoe took the dub in a more recent face-off with its extra dose of swagger.

The Expedition's refinement comes courtesy of a smooth, quiet ride and steering that inspires confidence. No V-8 is available, unlike most the Expedition's competitors, but we appreciate the sharp response and impressive towing capability from Ford's twin-turbo V-6 powerplant. That said, at times the 10-speed auto can deliver some clunky shifts. We look forward to testing the 2022 Expedition to see if Ford has addressed this minor issue.

At least for pre-2022 models, the interior design feels straight out of an F-250 but we appreciate the spacious, comfortable cabin nonetheless. Even third-row passengers won't feel squeezed, and third-row access is easy. There are even cupholders, USB ports, and air vents in all three rows of seating. The infotainment system is relatively intuitive and works well, although the 8.0-inch screen on pre-2022 models looks on the smaller side, especially hiding in that massive dashboard. Could a 2022 Expedition offer a larger screen? We'll soon find out.

Performance and Efficiency

There's only one powertrain option for the Expedition, a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The twin-turbo V-6 develops a burly 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, fed to standard RWD or available 4WD. When we tested a standard-wheelbase Navigator with 4WD, it reached 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. Fuel economy numbers from 2021 read 16-17/21-23 mpg city/highway.

Safety Ratings and Features

In crash testing performed by the NHTSA, the Expedition earns a five-star overall safety rating, consisting of five-star front- and side-crash ratings and a four-star rollover rating. Ford also includes a host of driver-assist features, including automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking, and rear parking sensors. Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic assist are also offered.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The Expedition offers a small movie theater's worth of interior space, although cargo volume and legroom slightly trail the figures posted by Chevrolet's Tahoe and Suburban.

Cargo space (behind first/second/third rows):
2022 Ford Expedition: 104.6/57.5/19.3 cubic feet
2022 Ford Expedition Max: 121.5/73.3/34.3 cubic feet
2022 Chevrolet Tahoe: 122.9/72.6/25.5 cubic feet
2022 Chevrolet Suburban: 144.7/93.8/41.5 cubic feet

Legroom (first/second/third rows):
2022 Ford Expedition: 43.9/41.5/36.1 inches
2022 Ford Expedition Max: 43.9/41.5/36.1 inches
2022 Chevrolet Tahoe: 44.5/42.0/36.7 inches
2022 Chevrolet Suburban: 44.5/42.0/36.7 inches

Technology

Regardless of trim, the Expedition works with an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability are all standard. If you want integrated navigation, it's optional on the base XLT trim or standard on Limited trims and above. The standard audio system is a basic six-speaker setup, but a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium system is available. An optional rear-seat entertainment setup will keep second-row passengers busy with video displays mounted to the front-row seatbacks.

Ford's Biggest SUV

The Expedition is the top dog among Ford's SUVs, positioned above the Explorer, Mustang Mach-E, Bronco, Edge, Bronco Sport, Escape, and EcoSport. Although both the Explorer and Expedition have three rows of seats, the Expedition is a much larger vehicle. Compared to the Explorer, the Expedition is 11 inches longer, 1 inch wider, and 6 inches taller. It also weighs about 1,000 pounds more.
