For 2008, the best-selling Ford Explorer continues as the cornerstone of Ford's SUV line.
The Explorer has two engine choices on all trim levels. The 4.0 liter V6 puts out 210 horsepower and is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The more powerful 4.6 liter V8 produces 292 horsepower and is linked to a 6-speed automatic.
Available trims are XLT, Limited, and Eddie Bauer Edition. All are available in 2 or 4 wheel drive. All Explorers offer a long list of standard features. For options such as powered, adjustable pedals, quad bucket seats and a universal garage door opener, one has to opt for the Eddie Bauer or Limited.
The Explorer Limited has a 3rd row and seats up to 7, while the XLT and Eddie Bower seat 5.
Mileage for the V6 powered Explorer is 14 miles per gallon, with the V8 getting just one less mile per gallon at 13. Both engines get 20 miles per gallon on the highway.
Base MSRP is $25,755. With full options, expect to pay in the low to mid 30's.
Whether you're getting away from it all or hauling the family around town, the 2008 Ford Explorer has all the power and room you'll probably need, making it a great all-around mid-sized SUV.
