2022 Ford F-350 MODEL OVERVIEW

  • Former Truck of the Year winner
  • Diesel engine has segment-leading torque
  • 10-speed auto is standard

  • Prices approach six figures for top trims
  • Dated exterior design
  • Unsettled ride with unladen bed

Hugely capable and offered in a staggering variety of configurations, the Ford F-350 walks the line of consumer and commercial heavy-duty trucking. Ford keeps its pickup fresh with several updates that should improve the vehicle's structural integrity and its connectivity capabilities.

What's New

  • Improved frame reinforcements
  • Lariat trim now comes standard with Ford's SYNC 4, satellite radio
  • Lariat trim offers Baja and Black Onyx interior themes
  • Available armrest storage with 40/20/40 split bench front seat on XL models
  • New 360-degree LED warning strobes
  • New Atlas Blue paint color

What We Think

Ford offers powerful engine choices and a standard 10-speed automatic transmission across the entire F-350 lineup. The diesel engine is especially capable, and its segment-leading torque output makes towing a breeze.

Ram may hold the title for best interior in this segment, but Ford's truck is well made and the F-350's cabin can be legitimately luxurious at higher trim levels. Steering feel is good considering the vehicle's size, but we noted an unsettled ride when the truck's bed was empty in our testing. As our 2017 Truck of the Year winner, the Ford is worthy of consideration. But so is its Ram competitor, which took home the Golden Calipers for 2020.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The F-350 comes with three different engines, all mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission and offered with either standard RWD or optional 4WD. The base powerplant is a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8 that develops 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Ford also offers a bigger, more powerful 7.3-liter V-8 that churns out 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque.

At the top of the range sits a 6.7-liter turbocharged diesel V-8 producing 475 hp and a twisty 1,050 lb-ft of torque.

Payload and Towing

The F-350 can carry as little as 2,890 pounds in the crew cab, long bed, and 4WD configuration. But an F-350 regular cab, long bed, RWD version with dual rear wheels tops out at 7,850 pounds.

Equipped with the 6.2-liter gasoline V-8 engine, the F-350 is least capable in SuperCab configuration with 4WD and dual rear wheels where it can pull a conventional loaded trailer weighing 12,300 pounds. On the other end of the capability spectrum, maximum towing for the F-350 with the diesel engine is 21,200 pounds when the truck is in the crew cab configuration with dual rear wheels and rear-wheel drive.

With the gooseneck or fifth wheel, the least capable variant, the F-350 crew cab with 4WD and dual rear wheels, can tow 12,000 pounds. Maximum towing is an astonishing 35,750 pounds with the diesel engine, regular cab, RWD, and dual rear wheels.

Safety Ratings and Features

Ford offers the F-350 with a few available driver assistance technologies, including front automatic emergency braking, trailer sway control, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The Ford F-350 isn't quite as spacious in some measurements as its rival from GMC.

Bed cargo space:

  • 2022 Ford F-350 8-foot bed: 78.5 cubic feet
  • 2022 Ford F-350 6-foot-9-inch bed: 65.4 cubic feet
  • 2022 GMC 3500HD 8-foot bed: 83.5 cubic feet
  • 2022 GMC 3500HD 6-foot-9-inch bed: 69.6 cubic feet

Legroom (first/second rows):

  • 2022 Ford F-350 SuperCab: 43.9/33.5 inches
  • 2022 Ford F-350 SuperCrew: 43.9/43.6 inches
  • 2022 GMC 3500HD Double Cab: 44.5/35.2 inches
  • 2022 GMC 3500HD Crew Cab: 44.5/43.4 inches

Ford equips the basic versions of the F-350 with a small 4.2-inch infotainment screen and a gauge cluster display of the same size. Ford increases the size of these units in higher trim levels to 8.0 inches each. King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited models all have standard 12.0-inch infotainment displays. The bigger screens have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability and available navigation.

For the base XL trim, a four-speaker sound system is standard on the regular cab, while six speakers are standard on the SuperCab and crew cab. Stepping up to the XLT model bumps those numbers up to five and seven speakers, respectively. From the Lariat and up, Ford equips the truck with a premium B&O 10-speaker sound system with a subwoofer.
