As gas prices rise and car buyers demand more fuel-efficient vehicles, many carmakers are forced to rethink market segments. No vehicle illustrates this better than the 2010 Ford Flex. The 7-passenger Flex is a crossover SUV built to replace the Ford Freestar minivan, yet has design cues similar to that of Ford's Sport Utility lineup. It's goal is to appeal to minivan buyers while attracting SUV buyers looking for a more fuel-efficient alternative to their body-on-frame SUV's.
There are three versions of the Flex: the Base SE, SEL, and the top of the line Limited. We drove the SEL model. It came equipped with polished stainless steel exhaust tips, 18-inch wheels, fog-lamps, and the three-bar chrome grille that is the latest design trend for Ford.
The base engine for the Flex is a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 262 horsepower and 248 pound feet of torque. After only one year of production, a new turbocharged variant of that engine is available. It puts out 355 horsepower and 350 pound feet of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels or available all wheel drive through a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy for the Flex ranges from 16 miles per gallon city, up to 24 miles per gallon highway.
The Flex lives up to its name with its many practical interior features and superb versatility. Not only does it get a 60/40-split fold second row, but it has a 50/50 split for third row as well. The SEL model has a one-touch power lift gate, leather seating all-around, a heated 10-way adjustable driver's seat and a 6-way adjustable front passenger seat.
Little things make the Flex stand out, such as an assortment of door panel and center console storage solutions, three 12-volt power outlets, and an available ambient lighting package.
Safety features on the Flex include 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, front and side impact airbags, and Ford's AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control.
Initial base MSRP for the 2010 Ford Flex is $28,550. A fully loaded all wheel drive Limited model can break $50,000. The Flex is backed by a 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
By combining the best attributes of SUV's, minivans, and family sedans, the Flex lives up to its name... providing flexible seating and storage arrangements for just about any motorist and his family, co-workers or entourage.
