2005 Ford Focus Review

A small car that is fun to drive and can be quite affordable.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2005 Ford Focus is a small, yet spacious car. It can hold five passengers with relative ease or can fold its rear seats for cargo space. The 2005 model has a lower purchase price and a decent fuel economy. This car has sharp handling that makes it fun to drive. From all the different models and trims available, there is sure to be some combination to suite anyone’s needs. The basic model can indeed be quite basic, but there are options for upgrades, such as power windows and locks or extra airbags. All the models except for the Focus ZX4 ST have the same two-liter, four-cylinder engine that has a nice Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) rating, which meets California and New England requirements.

The Range

Engines: 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine (ZX4 ST only)

Models: Ford Focus ZX3 (two-door hatchback) S, Ford Focus SE, Ford Focus SES; Ford Focus ZX4 (four-door sedan) S, Ford Focus SE, Ford Focus SES, Ford Focus ST; Ford Focus ZX5 (four-door hatchback) S, Ford Focus SE, Ford Focus SES; Ford Focus ZXW (Wagon) SE, Ford Focus SES

What's New

Ford revised and updated the exterior of the Ford Focus in 2005. The interior of the Focus was remade with a much more sophisticated feel. This time around, all the engines for the different models and trims except the ZX4 ST have been standardized to a two-liter, PZEV-rated engine. In a pleasant change, all the different trim levels and packages have been organized and named according to a standardized system of trim and model.

Exterior

This is definitely a small and compact car; the sedans have a length of 14.6 feet, and all of the models have a wheelbase of 103 inches.

The fascia of this vehicle is reformed with a lower, wider air intake and a larger grille sporting a diamond-patterned cover. It is fitted with clear lens headlamps and stylish round fog lamps. The radio antenna also rises up from the center of the windshield keeping a nice symmetrical outer appearance.

Interior

The dashboard of the 2005 Ford Focus is immediately noticeably different from the 2004 version. While the 2004 model had a certain artsy edge to it, the 2005 version’s symmetrical dashboard is a lot more reasonable. The interior can be customized with four different color schemes and a choice of cloth and leather upholstery. Increased audio options are also available for the music lovers. This vehicle has large doors to allow easy entry and departure and higher seats to accommodate people of varying size. It can seat up to five people, and it does so better than some of its competitors. The backseat does fold down for extra cargo room. With the seats folded, the hatchback models can have up to 40 cubic feet of storage space.

Performance & Handling

The Focus ZX4 ST has a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder, inline engine with a double overhead camshaft (DOHC). This gives the Focus ZX4 ST 151 horsepower at 5750 rpm but no longer earns the PZEV rating. All the other Focus models and trims have a two-liter, four-cylinder, inline engine with a DOHC. This only drops the horsepower to 136 at 6000 rpm and maintains its PZEV rating. Regardless, the Focus handles smoothly and has the crisp steering expected in a small car.

Safety

This vehicle does not have an overabundance of safety features. Side-impact airbags are optional for all models and anti-lock brakes are optional for all models except for the Focus ZX4 ST, which comes standard. However, the Focus does use a safety cell body that uses particular parts of the car body to absorb impact forces and spreads it out.
