Overview

The 2009 Ford Focus suits those on the lookout for a reasonably priced sedan. It will get you where you intend to go, though the driving experience is nothing special. Drivers like the quick and responsive steering wheel, but even the trims with the sport-tuned ESS lack the energetic handling that has traditionally been the highlight of earlier Ford cars. The 2.0-liter engine proves adequate in regards to power; however, it emits a raucous noise while cruising at higher speeds.

While the five-speed automatic transmission gains popularity in the basic sedan segment, the Focus guarantees a fine performance with only four. The gears of the car are nicely spaced, and the transmission rarely shifts up and down in search of the correct gear, even on a steep incline. The model suffers from average road noise while driving on the highway, but it suppresses wind noise well.

What's New

For the 2009 model year, Ford shuffles the trim levels for the Focus. The sedan comes in four trims, while the coupe variant offers two. The latter, though, only introduced in 2008, gets an exterior sprucing up and some minor modifications to improve performance. The heated leather seats come standard on the top-line SEL sedan variant and offer an optional accessory for lower trim levels. Stability control also joins the list of options.

Exterior

The exterior of all the models of the 2009 Ford Focus has chrome finish. The base model Focus sedan comes with 15-inch wheels, and its SE variant gets interior trim. The SES variant offers upgraded tires and 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and fog lamps, besides a firmer suspension tuning to ensure better handling. The coupe version of the 2009 Ford Focus comes in the SES and SE trims. Both of these trims resemble the sedan variants. Differences include a sport exhaust and 17-inch wheels on the SES coupe.

Interior

The interior of the Focus sports a contemporary look, courtesy of the sprucing up it received in 2008. Though the front seats are flat, they prove to be supportive enough during long drives. Compared to small cars, the interior of the 2009 Ford Focus offers nothing special with regard to the materials used and the overall design aesthetics, even with optional aluminum-like trim highlights and the colored interior lighting.

The 2009 Ford Focus comes as either a coupe or a sedan. The four-door body style comes in four trims. The basic S model features air-conditioning, a tilting steering wheel, and a four-speaker music system with a single MP3/CD player and an auxiliary audio input jack. Satellite radio and cruise control lengthen the list of options.

The SE variant includes full power accessories as well as a Sirius satellite radio. Options on this trim include Sync, an upgraded stereo system that comes with a six-CD changer, faux-aluminum interior trim, an upgraded driver’s seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, customizable interior lighting, and heated side mirrors.

Performance & Handling

The Focus offers a single engine option for the 2009 model year—the inline 2.0-liter, four-cylinder that generates 140 hp and 136 lb-ft of torque. A cleaner variant of the engine is also available to meet the California-emission laws. The latter engine delivers 132 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque.

The five-speed manual transmission system comes standard on all Focus models. A four-speed automatic can be fitted as an option. The automatic transmission on the SES coupes has been slightly geared for shorter and better acceleration.

Safety

All Ford Focus models contain six airbags. These include front-seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags for both rear-seat and front-seat passengers. Stability control and anti-lock brakes remain optional for all trim levels.
