The 2018 Ford Focus is unchanged for the new model year.

Trim Levels

The compact Ford Focus sedan and hatchback slot above the subcompact Fiesta sedan and hatch and below the midsize Fusion and full-size Taurus sedans in the automaker's passenger car lineup.

2018 Focus S: Available as a sedan only, the base S trim comes equipped with power-operated side view mirrors, automatic headlights, keyless entry, hill start assist, power front windows, a 4.2-inch instrument cluster driver's display, a 4.2-inch center display screen, a USB port, six-way manual adjustable driver's seat, and 15-inch steel wheels.

2018 Focus SE: Moving up to the SEL trim adds 16-inch aluminum wheels, power front and rear windows, cruise control, SiriusXM satellite radio, and illuminated entry.

2018 Focus SEL: The SEL trim adds LED daytime running lights, black bezel headlights, fog lights, rear parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, interior ambient lighting, power moonroof, Sync 3 infotainment system with HD Radio, an 8.0-inch center touchscreen, a 10-speaker Sony audio system, two USB ports, and 17-inch machined aluminum wheels.

2018 Focus Titanium: Building off the SEL's features, the Titanium adds chrome headlight and fog light bezels, heated side view mirrors, one-touch up/down on all windows, remote engine start, quick entry with a push-start ignition, a heated steering wheel, leather-trimmed and heated front seats, eight-way power front seats, and 17-inch polished aluminum wheels.

2018 Focus Electric: Offered in a single trim, the Focus Electric comes standard with HID headlights, LED taillights, LED charging indicator, rear parking sensors, remote engine start, dual 4.2-inch instrument panel driver's display, Sync 3 with navigation, HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, a nine-speaker Sony audio system, six-way manual driver's seat with eco-conscious cloth, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.

2018 Focus ST: The Focus ST adds sporty and performance features like a unique ST grille, unique rock panels, performance-inspired rear spoiler, a leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel, unique ST leather-wrapped and alloy gear shift knob, mini analog cluster gauges, aluminum pedals, sport-tuned suspension, ST center exhaust tip, chin spoiler, 18-inch Rado Grey alloy wheels with summer tires, and the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine backed by a six-speed manual.

2018 Focus RS: The range-topping and high-performance RS model enhances performance and looks with a unique RS grille, HID headlights, functional rear spoiler, unique RS leather-wrapped Sport steering wheel with blue stitching, interior carbon-fiber accents, unique RS leather-wrapped and alloy shifter, unique instrument panel finish, mini analog cluster gauges, heated steering wheel, SYNC 3, 10-speaker Sony audio system, six-way power adjustable and heated front seats, Recaro seats with Miko Dinamica microfiber inserts and RS logo,, driver-selectable sport suspension, a high-performance braking system with blue painted calipers, Ford Performance all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, a Quaife mechanical limited slip differential, selectable drive modes, 19-inch painted forged-alloy wheels with RS center cap, and a 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 engine paired to a six-speed manual.

For more creature comforts along with the Focus ST's performance-focused credentials, consider ST3 package that adds Recaro Charcoal black full-leather heated front seats, a navigation system, eight-way power driver's seat, interior ambient lights, heated steering wheel, and carbon-fiber interior accents. If you plan to track your Focus RS or just want maximum grip, opt for the available Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 summer tires.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Four engines are offered on the 2018 Ford Focus depending on trim level. The base engine is a 2.0-liter I-4 that develops 160 hp and 146 lb-ft of torque and delivers an EPA-rated 25/34 mpg city/highway when backed by the five-speed manual and 26/38 mpg when backed by the six-speed dual-clutch automatic (24/34 mpg with the SelectShift six-speed dual-clutch). The 1.0-liter turbo-three produces 123 hp and 125 lb-ft and comes mated to a six-speed manual (30/40 mpg) or a six-speed automatic (27/38 mpg) and is standard on the SE trim.

The sporty Focus ST hatch is powered by a 252-hp, 270 lb-ft 2.0-liter turbo-four mated to a six-speed manual (22/30 mpg), and the high-performance Focus RS hatch is powered by a 350-hp, 350 lb-ft 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 mated to a six-speed manual and an all-wheel-drive system (19/26 mpg). In Motor Trend testing, the 2015 Ford Focus RS hit 60 mph in a quick 4.8 seconds and stopped from 60 mph in 110 feet. The Focus ST hit 60 in 6.3 seconds and stopped from 60 mph in 108 feet. The Ford Focus Titanium with the 2.0-liter engine most Focuses will have, hit 60 in 8.4 seconds and stopped from 60 in a very short 105 feet.

Safety

The 2018 Ford Focus received the highest overall safety rating of five stars from the NHTSA for sedan and hatchback body styles. In IIHS testing, The 2018 Ford Focus received the second-highest rating of Acceptable in the driver-side small overlap front crash test and received the highest rating of Good in four other crash test evaluations. The front crash prevention test was not conducted because the Focus does not offer emergency automatic braking. Standard safety features include a rearview camera, dual-stage front airbags, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available safety features include active park assist (self-parking system), rear parking sensors, lane keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert.

Utility (Cargo Space and Interior Room)

The Focus sedan offers 13.2 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk and the hatch has 23.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and up to 43.9 cubic feet behind the front seats. The Chevrolet Cruze sedan offers more with up to 14.8 cubic feet of cargo room in the trunk and the hatch has 22.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 47.2 with the seats folded down. Legroom up front for the Focus measures at 43.1 inches and the rear seats have 33.2 inches of legroom.

Technology

Standard technology for the Focus includes the Sync infotainment system displayed on a 4.2-inch center screen, a USB port, keyless entry, a 4.2-inch instrument cluster driver's display, and a four-speaker radio system. The upgraded infotainment system is Sync 3 displayed on an 8.0-inch center touchscreen with HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, two USB ports, and a 10-speaker Sony audio system. Navigation, interior ambient lighting, and dual 4.2-inch instrument cluster driver displays (Electric model) are optional.

What We Think

In a First Test review of the 2016 Ford Focus RS, we said the acceleration, lateral grip, stopping power, and figure-eight course time were all very impressive, on par with more expensive sports cars. One of our biggest complaints happen when the hatch is in track mode: "At that point the dampers turn into pogo sticks, and the hatchback starts bouncing up and down like an excited Boston terrier. It isn't like a rough ride that you'd ignore in a sports car, but an unbelievable and constant vertical shake, as if riding a sine wave. It happens both mid-corner and on the straights, no matter how smooth the pavement."

Take away the pogo stick effect and, "the Focus RS will reframe your perception of previous all-wheel-drive sport compacts, such as the Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. It's much, much faster and more fun to drive." However, when loaded, the Focus RS gets expensive, "the Focus RS gets close in price to the vastly superior-handling and faster Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE. The hatchback and four doors make the car more livable for a single-car family, but there are better-performing and better-riding cars available for $42,245."

When we reviewed both 2016 Ford Focus SE sedan and hatchback with the 1.0-liter turbocharged I-3 EcoBoost engine during a First Test, we were not impressed with the performance, but that was expected because these engines were developed for maximum fuel efficiency and not quick acceleration. We felt the manual-transmission model was more responsive around town and the engine was quiet and torquey (once the engine gets past the turbo lag). The Focus handles surprisingly well but the steering is vague on center with plenty of play. We concluded by saying: "The 2016 Ford Focus SE Sedan 1.0-Liter EcoBoost is a compelling choice for those looking to maximize fuel economy in their compact sedan or hatchback. We would choose the manual transmission to save on upfront costs and at the pump. The manual-equipped car is significantly quicker and seals the deal."
