Exterior

The Mustang, which received a full redesign in 2005, features a thoroughly modern design, with a number of retro flashbacks to the car’s glory days of the 1960s. Details, such as the oversized grille and rounded headlights, sculpted sides and fastback silhouette, and triangular side windows, all recall former landmark models from four decades ago.

Standard exterior equipment remains limited; this classic machine also sticks with the past when it comes to high-tech luxury. Modern standard offerings only include power windows, power-adjustable mirrors, interval wipers, and a rear window defogger.

Performance & Handling

Always marked for its spirited acceleration and powerful movement, the 2006 Ford Mustang hangs on to its reputation with two muscular engine options. The V6 Mustang gets its power from a four-liter V-6, rated at 210 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. Open the hood of the Mustang GT to catch a glimpse of the 4.6-liter V-8, capable of pushing 300 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

Both the manual and automatic transmissions offer energetic acceleration. The 2006 Mustang tackles corners with precision and stability, while the brakes feel sharp and responsive. While all models provide a fun, athletic driving experience, the real muscle lives in the GT. This true muscle car offers a generous amount of torque and an overall thrilling, yet stable, ride. At the same time, the 2006 Mustang experiences very little wind and road noise compared to other muscle cars. The level of ride comfort in this classic car seems as impressive as its strong, sporty performance.

Safety

All Mustangs come standard with four-wheel disc brakes, while anti-lock brakes and traction control come standard on the GT and optionally on V-6 models. Ford offers no stability control on the Mustang. Front side-impact airbags remain optional for all models, but they lack full-length head curtain airbags. The 2006 Mustang earns a perfect five-star rating on NHTSA front-impact tests and four stars for side-impact safety.

EPA Fuel Economy

Ford Mustang Premium: 17/26 mpg city/highway
Ford Mustang GT Deluxe: 15/23 mpg city/highway
