2011 Ford Mustang Review

This popular sport coupe turns heads wherever it goes

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2011 Ford Mustang, which comes as a coupe or a convertible, received major a redesign this model year with new engines and transmissions. Now, the Ford Mustang offers a 3.7-liter V-6, a 5.0-liter V-8, or a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine, paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Since the Mustang received quite a few upgrades in 2010, the design for the 2011 Mustang is a continuation, with newer exterior sheet metal making the vehicle more attractive than ever before. In addition, to shore up safety, the Ford Mustang is built with ultra-high-strength steel door intrusion beams. Fuel economy is a not-so-bad 19 mpg city / 29 mpg highway.

New for 2011

For 2011, the Ford Mustang got its most comprehensive power-train update in over a decade. New DOHC V-6 and V-8 engines replaced the old SOHC mills, and both 5-speed gearboxes were eliminated in favor of 6-speed transmissions.

Essentials

Engines: 3.7L V-6, 5.0L V-8, 5.4L supercharged V-8
Transmissions: 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic
Body Styles: Coupe, convertible
Trims: Base Coupe, Base Convertible, GT Coupe, GT Convertible, Premium Coupe, Premium Convertible, GT Premium Coupe, GT Premium Convertible

On the Outside

The V-6 Ford Mustangs finally got dual exhaust tips, while glass roofs are now an option on Mustang coupes. V-6s come with 17-inch wheels, GTs have 18-inchers, and 19-inchers are available are on both but standard on the GT500s.

From the Inside

The four-seat Ford Mustang has compromised rear-passenger legroom, and convertibles have tiny 9.8 cubic-feet trunks, while coupes offer 13.4 cubic-feet. A 1,000-watt, 10-speaker stereo is optional on Mustang GTs and GT500s.

Driving Performance

The Mustang 3.7L V-6 with 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque packs a lot of punch, while the GT's 5.0-liter V-8 is good for 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, and the GT500's 5.4-liter V-8 churns out 550 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The 2011 Ford Mustang's suspension provides the best-handling ever.

Safety Equipment

Standard safety features on the 2011 Ford Mustang include ultra-high-strength steel door intrusion beams, dual front airbags, front side airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, traction and stability control, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes.

Gas Mileage

V-6 coupe manual: 19 mpg city/29 mpg highway
