2022 Ford Transit MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • New EV powertrain option
  • Updated technology

Cons

  • Could use more cargo tie-downs
  • Basic models lack features
  • Adaptive cruise control only works at higher speeds

Ford's large commercial van is the Transit, which can be had in cargo, passenger, crew, and cutaway configurations. It's designed to carry huge amounts of things, people, or both. The Transit nameplate has long been a popular choice overseas, and Ford brought it to the United States in 2015. Despite being face-lifted in 2020, numerous features are added to the Transit for 2022.

What's New

  • Optional 12.0-inch infotainment display replaces previous 8.0-inch unit
  • Dual-passenger seating package puts center console between front seats
  • Keyless entry with push-button start becomes available
  • Reverse automatic braking added as an option
  • Rearview camera now available
  • Automatic engine shutdown feature option added
  • New shelving and bulkhead options
  • All-electric powertrain joins the lineup

What We Think

The Transit serves its functional purpose, providing huge cargo and passenger capacity between its various body styles and configurations. Features like its wide-opening doors, bright cargo area lighting, and tough-wearing materials are useful for any task.

Better still, the Transit drives quite well. Its strong engines get it moving adeptly, and the new E-Transit's electric torque should further improve drivability. Ride quality is fairly comfortable, and the Transit feels stable and composed even when unladen.

In basic builds, the Transit has few features and shows its work focus, but higher-end setups can function nicely as a mobile office or camper rig. With new technology and driver assist features offered for 2022, the Transit seems like a better choice than ever.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Regardless of engine choice, every Transit is equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission. RWD is standard, and AWD optional. The Transit's base engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 275 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. An optional EcoBoost twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 increases output to 310 hp and 400 lb-ft. In our testing of a RWD EcoBoost model, 0-60 mph acceleration took 7.6 seconds. Fuel economy should be similar to the 2021 model, which, depending on configuration, was rated at 14-15/18-19 city/highway mpg by the EPA.

Does Ford Make an Electric Van?

For 2022, an all-electric version of the Transit joins the lineup. The Ford E-Transit has the same form factor and available features as any other Transit model but is powered by electricity alone. Its 67-kWh battery pack is good for about 126 miles of range, which Ford thinks is enough for the daily needs of most commercial van drivers. The E-Transit is RWD with a 266-hp, 317-lb-ft electric motor mounted on the rear axle. It's equipped with AC and DC fast-charging capabilities, and an optional system allows the vehicle to power external devices. Like the standard Transit, the E-Transit is offered in various lengths and roof heights, as well as cargo, cutaway, or chassis cab body styles.

Safety Ratings and Features

On every Transit, Ford includes driver assist and active safety features like front automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and automatic high-beams. Optional or included depending on trim are adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. For 2022, reverse automatic braking and a camera-view rearview mirror join the list of available features.

How Much Cargo Can the Transit Hold?

The cargo van lives up to its name, providing as little as 280.9 cubic feet of space in low-roof, standard-length specification, and as much as 536.4 cubic feet in high-roof, extra-long body style. Even the passenger van provides ample storage space, with 100.5 cubic feet with all the seats upright and 425.4 cubic feet in 15-passenger, high-roof, extra-long setup. Behind the second row in the crew van, capacity is as low as 158.4 cubic feet behind in low-roof-standard length, and as much as 383.8 cubic feet in high-roof, extra-long configuration.

How Many Seats Does the Transit Have?

Transit cargo vans have two seats in the front row only. In passenger van specification, the Transit is offered in eight-, 10-, 12-, 14-, and 15-seat configurations. The Transit crew van serves as an in-betweener, combining good cargo capacity with seating for five passengers.

Technology

The most basic Transit models are equipped with a dinky 4.0-inch infotainment screen, but for 2022, a new 12.0-inch touchscreen running Ford's latest user interface is added to the options list. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities are standard on all. Built-in navigation is optional.

Is an Off-Road Transit Raptor on the Way?

The #vanlife #overlanding craze is in full swing these days, with folks building out all manner of vans for off-highway expeditions into the wilderness. Ford has caught on and showed the F-150 Raptor-inspired Transit Trail in the United Kingdom. Sporting tough styling and burlier rolling stock, this ruggedized van seems more ready to get dirty than other Transit models. Patent filings indicate that Ford is at least thinking about bringing the Transit Trail to the United States. We think that would be a smart move to take on the ever-popular Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for overlanding adventures.
