Mercedes has been keeping itself busy lately testing new vehicles from the coming SLS AMG supercar to its new S-Class coupe range, and now we can add the third generation Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class to the list.
Stuttgart’s small roadster looks to be undergoing some significant bodywork alterations, including a not-so-subtle re-working of the present car’s Formula 1-style snout. Expect the new front fascia to take several cues from the SL. Another change is a relocation of the SLK’s mirrors from the A-pillar to the door -– at least on the prototype. The significant camo at the rear suggests plenty of changes are in store for the rear of the car as well. Overall though, the SLK’s basic architecture -– two seat, rear drive, retractable hardtop – should stay the same.
Our spies indicate that the SLK prototype spied here looks to be about the same size as the present-generation car, and it’s a good bet to assume Mercedes will attempt to hold the line on weight in an effort to keep it as lean –- and by extension as green -– as possible.
It is believed that the new SLK won’t hit showrooms until 2012, so not much more is known at the moment, but expect the car to come with extensively updated powertrain options, including possibly a diesel option for the first time.
