Just Smaller than a Jetta: Polo Four Door Begins to Take Shape

VW's engineers have been spotted in the frigid regions of Europe testing the latest addition to the next-generation Volkswagen Polo lineup. The VW Polo sedan will join the current Euro-spec three- and five-door versions and will reportedly be built in both India and Mexico.

From what we can muster, this could be the version that Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby previously revealed would come to the U.S. Along with a four-door hatch, the Polo pair is slated to arrive on our shores by 2011 if the plans are to be believed. The sedan, Jacoby says, will be a little bit smaller than the most recent Jetta. Regardless of which region's specification is pictured, the sedan looks to be fairly close to being finalized.

Though heavily shrouded in camouflage, the new Polo nose is probably a mirror image of the current car's front end. The rear will be unique, given the sedan configuration. As of now, it's anyone's guess as to which of the Polo's multitude of gas and diesel engines will head our way. We certainly wouldn't complain if VW's new 1.2L diesel BlueMotion with a DSG is included in the mix, but we're not betting on it.

For North America, prices would need to be kept in the $13,000 to $15,000 range to maintain its competitiveness against the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and Ford Fiesta, and to keep costs down, the car will likely be produced at the brand's Puebla, Mexico plant.

Insiders say the Polo Sedan will makes its public debut at next January's New Dehli Auto Expo, followed by a European introduction at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.
