Exclusive First Look: 2003 GM Hummer H2 SUT

Text Size

Derived from the production-intent 2003 GM Hummer H2, the H2 SUT (sport/utility truck) concept vehicle is a serious machine. More refined and finished than its military ancestor in every way, this H2 SUT concept vehicle is every inch a Hummer, albeit more civilized. It blends a superior off-road capability and versatile rear cargo bed with an adjustable bulkhead and a handsome, no-nonsense interior of polished metal, leather and fabric, and state-of-the-art telematics.

"Unlike many show trucks, the SUT concept vehicle evolved from the production-intent H2 SUV, which has undergone extensive testing on some of the most rigorous and intense off-road trails in the world," saysTerry Henline, H2 chief designer.

The short overhangs of the SUT concept vehicle allow for radical approach and departure angles and exceptional ground clearance for minimal impact on trails. The 17-inch wheels and heavy-duty independent front suspension and five-link rear suspension provide good handling, carrying, and towing capability.

Powering the H2 SUT concept vehicle is GM's 6.0-liter, Vortec 6000 V-8 mounted longitudinally and mated to a heavy-duty five-speed automatic transmission with full-time all-wheel drive.

A distinctive feature of the SUT concept vehicle is its folding bulkhead at the rear of the passenger compartment that allows customers the flexibility to reconfigure this area for carrying people or cargo. To open up the cargo space, the rear window powers down into the bulkhead, which can then be folded flat into the floor. When the bulkhead is in its upright position, the H2 SUT concept vehicle can carry up to five passengers.

The SUT concept vehicle is packaged with state-of-the-art technological advancements, including roof-mounted, 360-degree infrared night vision, Global Positioning Satellite navigation, the OnStar system, and 110V power outlets galore.

Pop open the largest "skyroof" in GM's history, lower the rear window, and you have a truly open-air vehicle. Vertical side windows create an enormous roof area for carrying still more cargo, and give the interior a spacious feel.

Expect to see this body style in production, possibly after the H2 wagon goes on sale in 2002.
