VW explores the crossover market

Named in the spirit of great explorers before it -- Ferdinand Magellan who sailed uncharted seas, as well as the NASA space probe that journeyed to Venus -- Volkswagen has begun to explore the sport/utility market with an all-new hybrid "crossover" concept vehicle that is part car, part truck, and part SUV in its purpose. Volkswagen proposes the Magellan as a sensible solution for volume and versatility, ideal for families and professionals with the freedom and adventure sought by first-time car buyers.

Presented at the recent North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Magellan is powered by Volkswagen's new 275-horsepower W8 engine, recently unveiled in the United States under the hood of the new Passat. Incorporating two banks of four cylinders in a "W" pattern, the 4.0-liter 32-valve engine accelerates the Passat to about 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, and ought to provide ample power for the Magellan's multi-purpose persona.

Intended to be functional like a wagon yet rugged like an SUV, the Magellan features all-wheel drive, air suspension, electronic differential locks, short overhangs, and 19-inch wheels, to make it well suited for off-road adventuring. Michelin's new PAX tire system provides run-flat functionality that alleviates the need to carry a spare tire, thus providing ample storage in back along with good ground clearance underneath.
