Maserati is considering an additional bigger-volume model line, a cheaper vehicle to sit beneath the Quattroporte and Coupe/Spyder but above top-end Alfa Romeos.

Feasibility studies for that third model include a sub-Quattroporte sedan, based on a stretched version of Alfa's new Premium platform, as in the Alfa 159 and Brera. It has a control-arm front suspension and multilink rear, a transverse engine/ transmission, and a sophisticated variable torque-split AWD system.

The plan calls for a BMW X5-size Maserati crossover, using the 2008 Alfa Romeo crossover as its mechanical basis. Again, the platform is the premium components set with permanent AWD using Alfa's Torsen C center diff, but with taller ground clearance and bigger wheel-housings than in Alfa's 159 sedan and Brera coupe.

The smaller Maserati would get one of two V-6s the company is considering: One option is a V-6 version of its own V-8. Careful engineering is needed to cut cost--the V-8 is built to Ferrari methods, and its costs are unacceptable in a cheaper car. Another option is turbocharging the current 260-horse Alfa 3.2-liter direct-injection gas engine derived from GM's high-feature V-6. Turbocharging and capacity stretches up to 3.6 liters are possible on that unit, making 350-plus horses a likelihood in a Maserati version.
