Sketchpad: Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Will they build it?

A Jeep Grand Wagoneer built off the Dodge Ram platform has been an on-again/off-again project at DaimlerChrysler. While the original idea was for a full-size sport/utility designed to compete with the Ford Expedition and Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon, the changing face of the market (specifically, toward smaller, car-based crossovers) and the flagging fortunes of the Chrysler Group may have put the kibosh on the truck. An alternate plan was to have the Grand Wagoneer (recalling the big Jeep, which was far ahead of its time in the 1960s to 1980s) switch to the new Dodge Durango's platform. But the Durango plan has been dropped.

Now, there's a good chance the Grand Wagoneer will be the name applied to the stretched, three-seat next-generation Grand Cherokee. That sport/utility also has been delayed from a 2004 launch to calendar-year 2005, possibly in January.
