Sketchpad: 2005 Volkswagen C1

Audi's link with Maserati provides rear-drive platform

Volkswagen's Passat W8 is a short-timer, but VW isn't abandoning the segment between its midsize sedan and the new Phaeton flagship. This is a look at what's being considered beyond 2005, when the automaker introduces an all-new Passat. The next Passat shifts to a transverse-mounted engine layout, separating itself from the Audi A4/A6, with which it now shares basic architecture.

VW is considering various body configurations, including a sedan, a sporty wagon, and a crossover with a highly functional/flexible interior, like Mercedes-Benz's upcoming R-Class. Neither the next Passat's transverse-engine platform nor the Phaeton's expensive one are feasible for the C1. If VW chooses to build a sedan or sporty wagon, it'll probably raid the Audi parts bin for all-wheel drive and longitudinal engines. But another scenario has Maserati (which has linked up with Audi for all-wheel drive for its possible crossover) supplying a rear-drive platform for the sedan, wagon, or especially, the crossover. It'd be VW's first new rear-drive car since the 411, but with the new Maserati Quattroporte's transaxle system and 47/53 front/rear weight distribution.
